The 2012 Toyota 4Runner adds major audio and connectivity updates such as standard SiriusXM satellite radio, a USB port with iPod connectivity, and hands-free phone capability. For those who refuse to leave their technology behind, there is Toyota's available Entune multimedia system: a collection of popular mobile apps including Bing and Pandora, as well as data services like a fuel price guide and sports scores that will keep you connected.
For 2009, Toyota is offering a new Trail Edition package option for the V6-powered SR5 4WD. Trail Edition 4Runners gain a locking rear differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), water-resistant seat fabric and a new audio system with a detachable TomTom navigation unit. The system also provides Bluetooth connectivity, iPod integration and satellite radio.
Toyota's 4Runner SUV for 2015 is the last of a dying breed, that being the body-on-frame truck designed to tackle the toughest off-road obstacles and go in search of more. Softer crossover SUVs with adventurous sounding names like Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse and Dodge Durango may offer advanced 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems, but they are not designed to roll over boulders, logs or other immovable objects the way a 4Runner can. Its poor fuel economy and a somewhat truck-like ride aside, Toyota's rugged 4Runner SUV can rival its crossover competitors for on-road performance, with a powerful V6 engine and a number of packages and trims spanning the spectrum from the basic SR5 to the brutish TRD Pro Series.
