Radio Television Hong Kong News Archive (Unofficial)
Introduction
This page provides faster access to the RTHK's daily news archive.
I will download sound files from CUHK daily for the 11:00pm news at RTHK
radio 1. Since download from HK takes a lot of time, people in US are welcome
to use this page for faster access to the files.
For the new people, CUHK and RTHK held a joint project on providing daily
news 3 times a day on the internet. People can use ftp or WWW to retrieve
the sound files. The news is up-to-date. They provide three different file
types. Including sun u-law, GSM compressed sun u-law and mpeg2(audio).
For PC users, mpeg2 is most convienent, when comparing file sizes.
If you don't have a program that can read mpeg2 files(*.mp2), just choose
from the items below, you can get one.
Hardware/Software Requirement
You will need a PC, with windows 3.1 or above. A sound card. A WWW browser
for MS-Windows (e.g. Netscape) and a mpeg2 reader (e.g. Xing_ply). Sure you need some hard disk space and a speaker for the sound.
How to set it up
First time user, first need to choose from above, "Get the mpeg2 reader program". Find a good place to store it on your computer. Then run mpgaudio.exe
either in Windows or DOS(suggested). It will uncompress into about 7 files.
Xing_ply is the one you will use. Then go into Windows, create a new item
for Xing_ply. Now you are ready to get the news sound file. Click on the
above item "Today's News". When Netscape/Mosaic ask you how to handle this
file, choose save to disk. Don't configure a viewer. Since in that case your
sound file can be listened only once and it's gone. So choose save to disk,
and find a good place for it. Downloading may take 30min. So work on you assignment.
After it's done, click on Xing_ply, and open the mp2 sound file(today.mp2).
Then sit back and enjoy!
