Concluding Remarks

The report presents a level set approach to shape modeling. This method has several advantages over other approaches used for the same task. In particular, it allows the contour to freely merge and split and fit arbitrary complex shapes.

The algorithm takes a large number of iterations to converge. Faster extensions to this method using narrow band techniques have been presented. It would interesting to see the performance improvement obtained by using such techniques. Fast marching algorithms also exist for a restricted case in which the velocity does not depend on the curvature.

There has been work on introducing a force term which attracts the boundary toward the surface ( [1]). This term can help overcome the initial input required from the user to specify which region is outside the front and which is inside and also make convergence faster.
