The Guns Of Navarone
Drama
2
In this WWII spectacle, British intelligence learns that two enormous guns have been installed on the Aegean island of Navarone. The long-range field pieces are capable of destroying any British fleet trying to sail to Kheros, near Turkey, where a large British force is facing annihilation unless it is evacuated. It's the job of Captain Mallory and a handful of men to land secretly on Navarone and dismantle the guns. Crawford Speaks! And Sings! And Dances! In her first Talkie, Joan Crawford plays Bingo, a jungle-raised oil heiress, who turns Manhattan upside down in her hunt for Andy McAllister (Robert Montgomery), the man of her dreams. Unfortunately for Bingo, Andy is penniless and refuses to agree to the match until he can provide for the wild, rich girl. Andy's prideful position is more than encouraged by Bingo's Uncle Ben (Ernest Torrence), who seeks to scuttle their love match. In addition to its pre-Code costumes and situations, Untamed also boasts Robert Montgomery's first leading role and two songs sung by the throaty Joan "Chant of the Jungle" and "That Wonderful Something is Love" (a duet with Mr. Montgomery!).
The Young Stranger

Before he gained his fame directing cinematic masterpieces like The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May, John Frankenheimer made his feature film debut with this sensitive father-son drama about troubled youth. When clean-cut Hal Ditmar (Hawaii Five-O's James MacArthur), son of a wealthy movie producer (James Daly), gets into a fight with a movie theater manager (Whit Bissell) no one believes he acted in self-defense. With the police concerned that they have another juvenile delinquent on their hands, Hal's mother (Kim Hunter) thinks the problem lies in the growing gulf between father and son. Heartfelt and effective, Frankenheimer's already sure hand at the helm and the talent that star MacArthur shared with his illustrious mother Helen Hayes buoy The Young Stranger above the common ground of 1950's delinquency dramas.
A Star Is Born

A Star is Born marked Judy Garland's return to movies after a four-year absence, director George Cukor's first musical and first color film, and a showcase for great Harold Arden/Ira Gershwin songs in state-of-the-art stereo. One of the most beloved show-business stories of all time, it represents a career peak for many involved. Garland is singer Esther Blodgett, an undeniable talent on the rise. She catches the eye of Norman Maine (James Mason), an alcoholic actor in career decline. Their intense love transforms them both. Only one will survive Hollywood's slings and arrows. Shortened in response to exhibitor complaints after its premiers, the movie underwent one rebirth in 1983 when film historian Ronald Haver found almost all the cut sequences and supervised a reconstruction to near its original length. Its new rebirth is this breathtaking digital surround stereo track and incorporating picture and musical material recently found in the vaults.

Alec Guinness has double trouble in this stylish mystery thriller costarring Bette Davis, based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca). When John Barratt (Guinness) meets Count Jacques De Gué (Guinness again) while vacationing in the South of France, the lonely university professor can't believe his eyes...the Count is his exact double! But when Barratt awakens after a night of heavy drinking, he finds De Gué has vanished, leaving the professor in his place. Unable to convince anyone that he's not the Count, Barratt has no choice but to go along with the sham, fooling De Gué's friends and family, including his drug-addled mother (Davis) and jittery rich wife (Irene Worth). But it's only when he uncovers the Count's marriage contract that Barratt slowly tumbles onto De Gué's scheme: to murder his wife, run off with his mistress (Nicole Maurey) and dispose of his gullible double.

Four-time Academy Award® winner John Ford returns to his Irish roots in this lighthearted gem featuring three short films introduced by Tyrone Power and shot entirely in Ireland. The first, The Majesty of the Law, is the droll tale of a police inspector (Cyril Cusack) trying to serve a warrant on an old man (Noel Purcell) who assaulted his neighbor. A Minute's Wait tells the farcical story of how a train's one-minute depot stop turns into a two-hour delay. The final episode, 1921, stars Dublin's famed Abbey Theatre Players in a drama inspired by Lady Gregory's celebrated one-act play The Rising of the Moon, in which two bogus nuns attempt to save an imprisoned patriot (Donal Donnelly) from hanging. One of the most personal films he ever made, The Rising of the Moon was Ford's attempt to promote filmmaking in Ireland. He later remarked that he directed the picture "just for fun, and enjoyed it very much."

"I never wanted to do nothin' as bad as I want to be a lineman!" To farm boy Slim Kincaid (Henry Fonda), daring death in the electric high wires looks like mighty heroic work. So he shakes the sod off his boots and joins a crew, where a tough lineman (Pat O'Brien) befriends the newcomer -- including introducing him to his best girl (Margaret Lindsay). There's trouble ahead, on the job and in the heart, in this brawny, rough-and-tumble drama adapted from a popular book by William Wister Haines (Black Legion, Command Decision). The scenario lets Fonda do what he does best: manifest the strength and dignity of the common man. The denouement is sensational, with the two men climbing towers in a blinding blizzard to repair lines "as hot as an electric chair," knowing the slightest misstep means disaster.
The Dark Knight Rises
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. MPAA Rating: PG-13 - 2012 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and Legendary Pictures Funding, LLC. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as 'The Joker' (Heath Ledger). 300: Rise of an Empire
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield - on the sea - as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
"300: Rise of an Empire" pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
300
The epic graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) assaults the screen with the blood, thunder and awe of its ferocious visual style faithfully recreated in an intense blend of live-action and CGI animation. Retelling the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, it depicts the titanic clash in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his massive Persian army. Experience history at swordpoint. And moviemaking with a cutting edge. MPAA Rating: R ©
The Book of Eli
In the not-too-distant future, some 30 years after the final war, a solitary man walks across the wasteland that was once America. A warrior not by choice but necessity, Eli (Denzel Washington) seeks only peace but, if challenged, will cut his attackers down before they realize their fatal mistake. It's not his life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined to realize. Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself, Eli does what he must to survive--and continue. Only one other man in this ruined world understands the power Eli holds, and is determined to make it his own: Carnegie (Gary Oldman), the self-appointed despot of a makeshift town of thieves and gunmen. Meanwhile, Carnegie's adopted daughter Solara (Mila Kunis) is fascinated by Eli for another reason: the glimpse he offers of what may exist beyond her stepfather's domain.
