'Act of Valor' reeks of military-sanctioned exploitation drama aimed solely at the 'Call of Duty' set.
Richard Corliss
Fighting is a learned skill; so is acting. And the SEAL stars are plausible only when on maneuvers - performing as their own stunt doubles.
Chris Nashawaty
When the bullets are flying, Act of Valor is undeniably tense and thrilling.
Peter Travers
I don't know what to make of Act of Valor. It's like reviewing a recruiting poster.
Richard Roeper
The special ops missions are pretty amazing, but the SEALS as dramatic characters are under-developed.
Joshua Rothkopf
Like all advertisements, this scripted movie is a perfect fantasy: expertly coordinated, simplistic (the bad guys like yachts and bikini girls while our heroes have loving families) and more than a little scary.

The bad guys, who specialize in funny beards, funny accents, and shaved heads, would feel right at home in an Austin Powers movie.

A decent movie and worth the rent. Yes there some problems with the acting and pace of this movie, but I saw this movie knowing that these were active Navy SEALs. I can deal with the less than perfect acting. Did you know that many scenes in this movie were shot using live fire (the SWIFT boat scene was all live fire) or that 70% of this movie was shot on Canon DSLR 5D Mk IIs. Shane Hurlbut was the DP, look for him on Flicker for some killer behind the scenes photos. Thank you to all our military personnel for your service!
Best military movie by far!! This movie was awesome I have high respect for what our soldiers do in the field this movie will leave you speechless and in awe best military movie I've ever seen!! Don't listen to the idiot saying it's a toss up he's comparing this movie with a documentary...
Movie great. Google Play terrible. The first 40 minutes of the movie were great. Very captivating to see the SEALS in action. After 40 minutes, Google Play gave some BS error about unusual account activity, and I couldn't access the movie anymore. What is more frustrating is that this site is set up to make it very difficult to reach any support. Unless Google can make this right, would recommend you rent this movie elsewhere. FAIL.
Action Packed= Fake, its a toss up I love this movie but I wana clarify this movie has real active duty navy seals. IT WAS NOT BASED ON A TRUE EVENT. Also it is very Hollywood, still a great action move but if you want to see a war movie that's very realistic I would say see "RESTREPO" it was actually filmed on location in Afghanistan and ALL THE FIREFIGHTS ARE ACTUALLY REAL.
Very good movie. I must say, that Act of Valor was a Fantastic film. This goes down as one of the best Military movies, including Black Hawk Down & Saving Private Ryan! #Love.
Great action, not great acting Act of Valor, besides having great battle scenes, made me very proud and grateful of the men who serve in our military. The acting was honestly B movie level, but given the huge upsides to the movie I was more than happy with the overall package.

Poor This movie was really bad it had no character development what so ever the acting was really cheese.you couldn't really connect with any of the characters. This movie looks horrible in comparison to band of brothers. I know their both different(one is a Mini series the other a film) but act of valor could have done a better job it was just a clusterfuck of bs and for the people who say f*ck the haters are stupied because we obviously wachted the movie and said its bad its just an opinion
Good overall Nice american patriotic movie involving russians and islamic terrorists. and as said before its not the top actors and its not a top hollywood gfx, but it doesnt really matter
Best movie ever This is the most amazing movie in the world. Such sacrifice, honor, courage, love, strength... an absolutely moving film.
Terrible Contrived, manipulative, and predictable; you'd think the last thing this movie needs is terrible acting, but it has plenty of that too. I typically enjoy a good war story, but this isn't good. Skip it.
Excellent movie.... real SEALs made it great The real SEALs gave this movie a first-person realism, a first-hand experience to inspire some realism in the scenes, mixed with first-class showing of SEAL power, resulting in a first rate movie! A perfect example is how they portray how terrifying a firefight is with rifles. In typical Hollywood fare, rifles are video-game like... not to be feared. In real life, every bullet from every gun can kill.
Terrible Very under-done character development leaves you uncaring towards who these characters are. Names aren't obvious so you have even smaller amount of recognition for who's who when an actor is injured. The fact that one of the character's wive's is pregnant blatantly tells you who you can expect to die. This movie is literally garbage. Having it "filmed with real Navy Seals" makes it worse with the stiff acting and poor dialogue. Go watch Platoon instead.
Fantastic Film For those of you who criticized the actors for their acting ability need to keep in mind that their chosen profession is not acting. They chose to earn their paycheck by protecting our right to free speech. The "effects" were actual rounds fired, at actual targets, by actual military service members. Not a realistic video game by any means. As a veteran who served his country with honor; instead of criticizing the actors, or calling this movie a propaganda film, I'd rather you just say, "thank you" and nothing else. Your political drivel in the review of a movie is not wanted or needed. If you can't stand behind our troops, I'd much rather you stand in front of them.
Skip The Expendables and see this! Surprisingly. Far better than the predictable pablum produced by Hollywood. Not polished, but that's perfectly OK since the actors are REAL Navy Seals. It drags a bit in the middle, but if you give it your full attention you'll be rewarded with a good story with unexpected turns. I'm now in complete awe of the amazing feats of bravery performed by our military (and our amazing allies).
Great Film First of all, the acting in some of the non-combat related scenes may not seem to be up to par with many other Hollywood productions. This is likely due to the fact that these men are actual heroes and not the famous professional actors that many people admire. The film gives a glimpse of the US military's fight against terrorism abroad and domestically while not inserting too much Hollywood bloat that is found in many military movies. It really struck me as the viewer because every day, men like this, in all branches of the military, give their lives so that we as citizens can live peaceful lives. The film also seems to be a "shot across the bow" against terrorism by showcasing just a small amount of the amount of superior technology, training, and communication that the US military has in its arsenal. Overall, I would recommend this film to anyone. While it may not be as action packed as more well known war movies, it seems to realistically portray events that likely occur on a daily basis without us knowing of their existance. Despite all the problems the US currently has, it makes me proud to be an American and is reassuring to have men of this quality safeguarding our nation.
Decent Action sequences are pretty good. Acting is crap. The story is unoriginal. But, fun to watch. Worth a watch, but don't expect thematic brilliance.
True to a real extraction in a hot zone. You want to know what its truly like to be a SEAL. This is your chance. Can you handle it? Thats the question.. I was 101st Airborne/Ranger Vietnam. Special Forces SF is the way of a warrior. SEALs are the best SF units. One more truth the tech is abit out dated. SEALs and SF have cutting edge Technology that in the back of the operations they are well informed, due to security 911 etc. The movie was based on skills of human performance guts and sheer determination to get in and get out with 0 loss of life in their teams. We called it A-Team back in the day. 3 to 7 attack team. Our Heros are awesome.. Thank you for serving.
Should have been half an hour Nothing happens in this movie. I understand that the point is to show how a real SEAL mission might run however there is only twenty minutes or so of actual SEALs doing what SEALs are good at. The rest of the movie is a poorly acted mess that doesn't really go anywhere. I don't believe for a second that a CIA operative would warrant a huge military action. I can only speak from my understanding of my own military but MI-6 would have disavowed knowing who she was and probably sent a small team of MI-6 agents to clean up any evidence. She's a special agent not a diplomats daughter. Also I couldn't stand how neatly everything wraps up in the end it just doesn't feel like reality. Whole thing seems like its saying "Look at us, we're Americans, aren't we cool!" bollocks.
Stop complaining This movie is awesome. Everyone is complaining how the acting is bad. Well they are Navy Seals not actors. Also people who say this is just a propaganda movie are stupid its not propaganda its a movie that shows you some of the things that Navy Seals do. Also it doesn't have a crazy plot because it's realistic. So stop complaining.
