Even Redford bailing water for 106 minutes can be a bit much.
Wesley Morris
This is an uncommonly absorbing movie.
Joe Williams
We get the predictable plot points - storms, sharks, close calls with passing ships - but it feels like a uniquely handmade artifact.
Rene Rodriguez
All is Lost is a testament to a great actor, an experimental piece of cinema and a bit of a bore.
Lisa Kennedy
All Is Lost is very much Redford's triumph. His turn isn't pure disappearance so much as a brilliantly human example of cresting and plummeting, cresting and plummeting.
Liam Lacey
The movie is rigorous, serious and well-crafted, with Redford holding the screen using only his economical emotional reactions and physical presence.

Robert Redford is one of my favorite actors, I have watched most of his movies and really wanted to like this one. Unfortunately, being a sailor myself, this movie seems just a bad joke to me. Anyone who is even slightly familiar with sailing, would find this movie ridiculous. I am wondering why they didn't hire someone professional as a consultant. Once again it proves that even a good actor cannot do much without good screenplay and directing. I would probably say, that it is the worst Redford's movie ever. Don't waste your time.

Here's my take: I enjoyed the movie and then again I didn't. I wonder if they used any consultants. Having just visited the Mariners Museum in VA yesterday, in addition to having some maritime experience; I thought about the many things that were either omitted or possibly overlooked. The movie obviously took place in modern times. He did have a laptop, gps, and radios, but not an EPIRB or a SART? I suppose if he had those items to begin with there wouldn't be much of a movie. Perhaps the plot could have take place in a different time before all of the search an rescue emergency stuff was around. Either way I sat through the whole movie wondering what he would do next. I did look at it from a perspective that situations are never ideal and nothing happens according to plan. If anything, this movie had me thinking about myself and what it is that I would do in such a situation. Would I remember my training? Would I panic? Would I have the will to survive? How long until I feel that all is lost?

Horrible script. Get real. I stopped watching because the plot was so unbelievable I couldn't suspend my disbelief. You really have to at least try to have some semblance of reality to create believable drama. All I saw was Redford acting like an idiot who didn't know how to sail. First, why would he be so ambivalent to his yacht being struck? Why was he lazily splashing around while water was gushing in?? Why did he fix the antennae before the radio? Why was he shaving instead of setting the storm jib? So many unbelievable events.

Boring Robert Redford makes a lot of great dramatic faces but we cycle through them all within the first twenty minutes of the film. The rest is watching him deal with all the problems of survival at sea though with little success. [Redford] seems weak and bumbling throughout the film - no arc. The highlight of the film is when he let's out the first expletive after discovering his water has been contaminated. I was wondering the whole time, why is this guy at sea alone in the first place? He doesn't even have a waterproof radio. The novelty of shipwreck movies has faded. Life of Pi brought a new dynamic to the genre but this film adds little. The fact that he used a sextant has no bearing on his survival and seems like a shiny toy to add interest to what was otherwise a monotonous series of episodes of "let's watch Robert Redford desalinate water with a plastic bag in the sun."
Compelling High Concept & Haunting This high concept film crafted around the basic, compelling premise of man against nature is just as much a showcase for the director's fine storyteller talents as it is for Robert Redford's spot on performance. For those who want spoon fed distractions or an easy narrative, look elsewhere. If the haunting finale doesn't grab you in a deep and profound way, you simply weren't paying attention.
Huge disappointment fron Redford. This ain't your typical Redford film. Mechanical and desperate at times to make drama from nothing, it fails at even the simplest tasks. The character's unrealistic bad luck and his sometimes melodramatic reactions to said bizarre bad luck left me wondering how he got into this mess. No, not that mess... this mess of a movie. I hope this great writer, director and actor redeems himself with something at least palatable soon.

Suspend Disbelief The less you know or the longer you can suspend disbelief the more you will like this movie. The attempt to cultivate an emotional response from the viewer was as shallow the authors/director's understanding of maritime survival and sailing. Any of a number of true stories could have been used as a template for this movie... My wife was right... Pretentious and arrogant snooze fest.

Good movie I enjoyed the movie. I sail myself, and though, not technically accurate, the movie places you in his situation. Anyone who has spent time at sea knows all equipment can fail. GPS can fail, water makers can fail, radios, sat phones fail, we rely to much on technology. This movie shows that ultimately it's up to you as master of your vessel to save yourself.

A powerful message in an unsung masterpiece. Use everything you have to keep hope alive, even if it means you can no longer hold onto the only things you have been able to survive on up until the moment you decide to give them away. Not every glimmer of hope is a rescue story, and not all who need rescued get helped. But you'll never get the help you need unless you try with everything you've got to get the attention of someone who can lift you up, even when you truly believe that there is no point and all is lost.
