Rex Reed
Kevin Spacey gives the performance of his life.
John Hartl
Alan Ball's script is a terrific piece of material, and Mendes responds directly to its subversive, provocative vision of a curdled American Dream.
Jami Bernard
American Beauty approaches a manic, almost cartoonish edge without falling over. Both Spacey and Bening use extraordinary comic timing to bring these very sad, lost characters to life.
Jay Boyar
[The filmmakers'] attacks on real-estate agents, corporate America and suburbia aren't so much shooting fish in a barrel as they are shooting fish in a shallow dish.
Richard Schickel
Boldly challenging our sympathies, [Lester] somehow wins them because, to borrow a phrase, he's a man in full.
David Edelstein
The hairpin turns from farce to melodrama, from satire to bathos, are fresh and deftly navigated, but almost every one of the underlying attitudes is smug and easy.

Mendes and screenwriter Alan Ball, both making their feature debuts, resort to a few heavy-handed tactics to get their points across, but their sheer audacity is so exhilarating it hardly matters.

You see a typical suburban family like any other family. Look closer and you will find a man that is fed up with his life. After constantly being mistreated by his wife, looked over and treated as if he didn't exist he finally started to take control of his life. "So much beauty in the world" I love this movie! I love Kevin Spacey. This movies narration is well put together. I love the plot. I give it five stars. This is ultimately my favorite movie. Kevin Spacey starred as the loser husband that became fed up with his life and decided to stop living as if he were in a "coma" just going through life non existant.

Best movie of all time This movie is my all time favourite. It hit the spot for me when I first saw it back in '99, and it has not been budged since. Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning put on an undeniable outstanding performance, and the rest of the cast (including Chris Cooper, Wes Bentley, Peter Gallagher, Allison Janney, Thora Birch and Mena Suvari) was a complete knockout. All hands down to Alan Ball and Sam Mendes for this masterpiece!!!

Boo yaaaaawww For it's time it was a great movie that broke through the ridiculous era of Pier 1 Imports moms and dads who had to use the atkins diet or the douche bag teachers who swore it was thier duty to be the be all end all of morality. This movie separated itself from the norm as we expect movies to do.
Great movie The synopsis isn't even close, but its funny to read when you know what the movies about
Great Every once in a while, I come across a movie that makes me doubt everything I've previously thought was 10/10. This is one of those movies. You will not be disappointed by this indescribable movie, the synopsis and trailer do it no justice. Look closer.
