David Thomson
Entertaining and suspenseful in old-fashioned ways.
Tom Charity
Affleck himself turns in a quietly impressive movie star performance. Tony Mendez is a kind of anti-Bourne, comfortable with his anonymity, living off his wits, not his fists.
Tom Huddleston
For 100 minutes, 'Argo' is close to flawless.
Richard Roeper
'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.
Lisa Kennedy
Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.
Peter Rainer
The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.
User reviews

Very Good Movie Okay, so, yes, the movie does not do the Canadians, British, or New Zealanders justice, and that is a shame. On the upside, the movie makes me want to learn more. However, like a movie adaptation of a novel, it's important to consider the movie as a movie. And as a movie, this one was excellent. I loved how they combined historical footage with the movie. Very well done as a period piece. The dramatic tension worked very well. I was on the edge of my seat, and I already knew how the story ended!

Snoozefest A film about a wild historical moment that falls apart due to a poorly written script. I have no idea what tension critics saw in this movie. The hostages are seriously unlikable and they spend most of the movie sipping wine in the Canadian consulate's house. If your idea of tension is lying to get through customs, then I guess this is a real thriller. The presence of Goodman and Arkin are the only thing that kept me awake.
ARGO I JUST HAD TO SEE THE DEEP AND WORRIED LOOK IN BEN AFLEK'S FACE AND EYES IN THE PREVIEWS AND ALSO THE OVERWHELMING COMPASSIONATE HEART HE PORTRAYED FELT TO ME MORE REAL THAN ACTING!!! THAT IS WHY I LOVE BEN AND FEEL HE IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST ACTOR AND DIRECTOR IN THE WORLD!!!! <3. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS AND MAY GOD KEEP YALL SAFE ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIVES!!! PSALM 91:11. {\O/} ANGELS WATCHING OVER YALL!!!!!!! JOHN 3:16 <3 YOUR BIGGEST FAN AND FRIEND, ELLEN WILLIAMS

Most Overrated Movie of 2012 I went into this movie with high, expectations when I watched it last november. It had the highest cumulative rating on,rotten tomatoes with a 96% and the awards talk was already heating up. But when I saw it, I was incredibly disappointed. With adequate acting and an interesting plot, it put the event in perspesctive. However, the filmmakers overlooked or overhyped the most important details of the movie. And every five seconds there's an awful CLICHE. Affleck needs a lot more directorial work...

Fantastic Ben Affleck directs this masterpiece about the Iranian Hostage Situation. This movie has warm moments, great drama, perfect comedic timing, heart pounding moments, and the best catchphrase ever... Ben Affleck (The Town & Changing Lanes) makes Tony Mendes his won role and is really good at it. John Goodman (The Artist) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) deliver really good performances as well.

hollywood fiction how can they claim this was classified until now? anyone interested in the truth will find Canada saved them and the afflec character had a minimal part in the rescue. The Canadian ambassador even wrote a letter taking offense over this fictitious story. I saw a news report about the event on tv when it actually happened decades ago.
Hurray for the Canadians As a movie very good. Please don't consider it as being factual. The Canadians had more to do with the rescue than the Americas. The movie is a slap in their face. Without the Canadians they never would have gotten out. It would have been more respectful to have portrayed their contribution more accurately. I would like to thank the Canadians involved for which without their efforts the ending would have been a lot different. God bless the Canadians.
