The picture does have its plodding moments - but there's enough left over for the rest of us to have a reasonably good time.

It's a shame Tornatore's movie, impressive statement though it is, never musters the emotional potency that would make it really special.

The Bicycle Thief
THE BICYCLE THIEF is about a man, a worker, who must have a bike in order to work at his job. He is desperate, pawns everything to regain his machine, goes to work, has the bike stolen from him while his back is turned, and then goes on a search through Rome to find it. That is about all there is to it, but is happens to be very close to a lyrical masterpiece. This is not because we see Rome as it is, or poor people, or rags. It is because these actual details are organized by a humane view of life. The film is unafraid to examine openly, straightforwardly, the terrible distorted, destructive world which Man has made for himself.
Videocracy
Critically-acclaimed documentary explores the underbelly of the high-glitz, low-politics, skin-baring media culture promulgated by Berlusconi's ownership of the majority of the Italy's TV stations. Approaching the material as both insider and outsider, Gandini gains re- markable access to the world of Berlusconi's associates and the willing wannabes that swarm around them, unveiling a modern Italy as both comedy and tragedy.
The Future (Il Futuro)
When two orphans, Bianca and Tomas meet up with some friends, they concoct an elaborate scheme to rob an aging movie star and one-time Mr. Universe, Maciste (played by Rutger Hauer). At once a sly psychological thriller with erotic overtones, this unique film finds a young woman faced with a moral dilemma as a unique friendship develops between her and the actor in his crumbling mansion.

Popular Italian comedian Leonardo Pieraccioni plays Doc, a physician in a small town in the American West. Doc is a peaceful man opposed to hunting, ecological waste and eating meat; he heals the community's ills and lends a voice of reason when personal differences threaten to become violent. The community's peace is shattered when Doc's father, Johnny Lowen (Harvey Keitel) comes home, 20 years after he abandoned his family. As one might expect, Doc has issues with his father, and it doesn't help that Dad was a famous gunslinger whose presence attracts Jack Sikora (David Bowie), an vicious outlaw who has sworn to kill Johnny. Caesar Must Die
In a high-security prison in Rome, inmates prepare for the staging of Julius Caesar. Shakespeare's universal language helps the inmate-actors to identify with their characters, but the path is long and full of anxiety, hope and play. The wonder and pride for the play do not always free the inmates from the exasperation of being incarcerated, and angry confrontations put the show in danger. On the anticipated but feared day of opening night, the play is brought to life in front of a diverse audience of inmates, actors, students and directors.
