It's an unforgivably flat ending for a movie of such astonishing contours. But its first two-thirds -- which should be called The Joker's Big Misadventure -- is probably the best film of the year.
Jay Boyar
The storytelling has weaknesses, but the characters are fascinating.
Dave Kehr
The idea of doing a dark, neurotic, highly stylized and highly claustrophobic superproduction is an audacious and appealing one, but director Tim Burton has only made it halfway there.
Sheila Benson
Is it interesting? Fitfully. Is it fun? Not much, Gotham City fans, not much.
Variety Staff
Director Tim Burton effectively echoes the visual style of the original Bob Kane comics while conjuring up a nightmarish world of his own.
Jonathan Rosenbaum
The conceptual side of the movie--two rather sick two-sided antagonists having it out in a black and sordid context -- lingers.

In the end, one's reaction to Burton's blockbuster is little more than that of the Joker to Batman: 'Where did he get those wonderful toys?'

When Batman was fun not grisly One of the earlier comic book hero movies that actually looked like it came from a comic book. You can keep your Dark Knight trilogy. While that amps up the darker elements of the Batman ethos to contempory emo standards, this Tim Burton version is just plain fun. Almost 20 years later and I still listen to the music soundtrack. Jack Nicholson excels as the insane Joker, both ruthless and comical. Michael Keaton does a better job at playing the enigmatic billionaire-turned-avenger Batman. The only one who slags off is Kim Bassinger as the femme fatale, but the 80's were her decade to shine in that role.

Good Film, Poor Encode One of my all time favorite films and I decided to make it my first video purchase. Downloaded the HD version but was really shocked by how poorly encoded this was. This may have been from an HD source but what I bought wouldn't even qualify on YouTube as 720. I already watched it through so I doubt a refund is possible but I am just really, really disappointed in the quality.

EXCELLENT 80'S BATMAN MOVIE! STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITES BECAUSE OF MICHAEL KEATON HE HAD THE MOVEMENTS AND THE VOICE DOWN PERFECT! JACK NICHOLSON WAS GREAT AS THE JOKER! THIS MOVIE ALSO HAD A GREAT MUSIC SOUNDTRACK AS WELL! JUST LIKE JACK NICHOLSON SAID YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH PRINCE DOING THE MUSIC! What i really enjoyed about this film was the cast! They did an excellent job bringing Batman to the big screen and that's why i still consider this movie a classic!!
Too much like a cartoon. This movie is from my childhood, I liked it then but just not the same feeling anymore. Sorry but Black Knight Trilogy is 1000x's better! Christian Bale is the Batman , he gives Batman more of a real person feeling you can understand why he does what he does not just a story.
Batman Great classic must watch especially the die hard batman fans. I should know I am one
