Dave Calhoun
A good-looking and exceedingly polite film where perhaps a more complex one with less good manners would have been better.
Moira MacDonald
It's an old-fashioned movie with a very modern streak, centered by a vibrant star turn by Mbatha-Raw, whose watchful, wise Dido makes an enchanting heroine.
David Denby
Factually, the movie is probably a fraud, but it's crisply entertaining ...
Lisa Kennedy
Luminous British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw brings a hope and intelligent hunger to Dido. She's loved by her family enough to have a sense of belonging but hemmed in by broader cultural realities to experience moments of unease.
Tom Long
The film simply looks lovely, never moreso than when Mbatha-Raw is on screen.
Connie Ogle
Belle presents an interesting history lesson, one that had significant repercussions, but some of the developments in this storyline turn out to be woefully convenient.

With stately surroundings and hissable villains, director Amma Assante imbues the finale with such dramatic resonance that "Belle" becomes a ringing proclamation of human dignity.

Worthy of 6 stars This was a beautiful film that had my heart fluttering from beginning to end and no movie had done this except, Pride and Prejudice. This film not only touches your heart, but gives you history of a true story of an extraordinary woman and it's a journey worth watching and experiencing over and over again. Loved it. It was beautiful, passionate, heart wrenching, historical, and incredible. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves all of the above!

Griffith Vertican It has been some time since I have seen a movie that I would take the time to recommend... Belle is a cross between Pride and Prejudice and Amazing Grace, which means its is a love story with historical intrigue. If you're looking for a movie with action and guns... then watch Captain America Winter Soldier, but if you would prefer one based on an inspirational true story with great acting then you will enjoy Belle, especially if you are a romantic with a sense of justice. I for one highly recommend it.

A romance of one of the most historically significant cases on human rights This is a beautifully shot, well acted story line that sheds some idealized light on on one of the most historically significant cases on human rights. There are a Belle and there was the cruel and brutal Case of the Zong. Enjoy this movie as a movie with some historical material thrown in. It is TRULY enjoyable and well acted. And be aware that Belle's life after this period depicted in this movie, though far better then 95+% her contemporaries, was not all sunshine and light.
This is so awesome that I cannot begin to explain love it so much So awesome based on a true story I love it so freaking much I mean I can't even begin to explain how this makes me feel I mean I love that this is an interracial romance I mean and then I really seriously don't get why the other guy says that she disgusts him what is wrong with you seriously but overall it is a very very very very beautiful film and I just love it so much I'm going to recommend it to all of my family and friends to go watch this so yeah awesome awesome awesome awesome

Finally, the broader picture of history Really loved this movie. Historical pieces usually exclude ethnic people from any significant role. This did a great job. I've been a fan of Gugu Mbatha Raw for a long time & she did a great job of playing a young woman caught in a situation of wanting a full life and trapped in a repressive society, even inside a family that loves her. Hollywood needs to make more films like this with inspiring endings.

Finally 👏 I am just smitten with this film 🎥 I rate the whole of this movie with 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟's Bravo 👏👍💯 I wish we (African-American) 'ALL' could act as civilized Ms. Belle #JS we as a (black) people could Do So Much /So Many things if we'd be & think less barbaric! #FreedomOfSpeach #Love #Fairness #Church #LawChanging #Brokenhearted #LostOnes #Freedom #Fight4WhatsRight #Powerful #GreatStrength #Wealth #Inheritance #GreatMovie
