Over and over in this movie we hear variations on the phrase "everything's going to be OK." It's just impossible to head out of the theater and back into the wider world believing that's actually true.
Chris Vognar
We're in the steady hands of Paul Greengrass, a director fully aware that convincing crisis stories involve conflicting interests and passions.
Christy Lemire
The entire performance is one of the greatest in Hanks' prolific, varied career - a role that gives him a massive arc and the opportunity to show great range.
Christopher Orr
Whether or not you find it an inadvertent parable of the political moment (I do), Captain Phillips is a terrific film.
Richard Roeper
It's the work of Tom Hanks that makes this film unforgettable.
Peter Travers
This is acting of the highest order in a movie that raises the bar on what a true-life action thriller can do.

User reviews
An Outstanding Drama. I really enjoyed this movie. Another great performance by Tom Hanks! The facts are portrayed closely enough that you can feel the emotions the Captain and his crew must have endured. They also provided some background into the Somali pirates, although I had pure disdain for all of them throughout. Highly Recommend!!!
A Masterpeice best tru story based movie ive seen.I could feel the emotions of captain philips and his crew the scaredness, the shock after the military guys took out the pirates i feel likes captain phillips had emotions for the somali child the way he grew up and then just to see him get blown away.I vould see that captain phillips was sad for him or to see him go that way... but it was a great movie overall gave it 5/5 definitely deserved it
Great movie amazing story This is based on real events in 2009 this acctually happened this story is amazing love the plot and the suspension I dont want to spoil anything but I recommend that you watch it.
Exciting From Beginning To End Everything about this movie was just well made. From Tom Hanks, to the Somali pirates, to the Navy Seal team, ALL of it was VERY well made. I was so engrossed in this movie. It was exciting and riveting from beginning to end. I liked that they showed the lives of the pirates. Showing their side of the story educates closed minded people on what really happens throughout the world and why they do what they do. This was a GREAT movie! A must see!
Great Movie! Def worth renting!! This was quite a good movie, always been a fan of Tom Hanks, the storyline was fantastic, it never got boring and was pretty suspenseful especially towards the end! I've never heard of the director but he did a really good job, hope it wins an Oscar! Definitely would recommend this if your looking for something good to watch, thanks!
Good Realistic Suspense..... Movie adapted simple story line without taking too much artistic credit. The movie favors more realistic approaches from interactions between the individuals. So, you're not going to see the "hero" beaten to a pulp, only to rise up and kill multiple bad guys. Which was refreshing for a movie "based on a true story", considering most of them are extremely liberal with adding to the story for sake of Action. Overall, acting was very good, as was story.
Good but hatted the way it was filmed. The movie felt like it was filmed with a DSLR camera and a lens that was not wide enough (and hand held). I realize that is a style but it was tiring after 10 minutes and the movie was 2+ hours. Other than that, the movie was suspenseful. Worth seeing but I won't see it again.
Tom Hanks Many great actors come and go. We as an audience experience a wide range of emotions with those actors, whether it be excitement, fear, happiness, or sadness. Let me say that Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors who has ever lived. But maybe you already knew that, judging by his career. However, Hanks (some how) managed to deliver a performance better than all his previous, combined. The last 20 minutes will leave you breathless and emotionally unstable.
AMAZING!! Who wouldnt watch a Tom Hanks film?? but I was very impressed with the first time actors who portrayed the pirates! I did my research and found out that the four pirates had no acting experience what so ever so I was completely blown away by their performance! And the second pirate in command, very intimidating! I mean I was on the edge of my chair the entire movie and I cried at the end lol it was EXCEPTIONAL!!! If you have yet to see this movie I strongly suggest that you watch it. Best movie this year!!!
Fantastic! Superb acting! Let me start by saying I have never been moved to write a review, for fear it will be lost in the sea of reviews, but if this convinces one person to watch the movie then it is worth it. This movie was fantastic, devoid of all the seemingly requisite side plots thrown into the movie. There is no letdown as a character finally achieves their goals, just a great story told incredibly well. Everyone down to the background actors deserves a solid high five.
Intense This movie is based on true story and tells about somali pirates capturing a ship and hostages and then about the rescue operation. Strong as both real life drama which is wonderfully played and propaganda (though wiki states it was true) of carrier, destroyer and a seal team following a handful of pirates to save one american. Wow... ???????? ? ??????????. The drama part is great. Emotions of both hostage and pirates are very very believable
Arrrr, dat be good watchins matey Is there anything that Tom Hanks does that isn't completely watchable? I could watch this guy sit at a table and twiddle his fingers for 2 hours. Add to this, some wonderful acting by the lead antagonist. There are some questions as to the authenticity of the depictions of some of these events... But just as a film this thing is great
By far the best movie of the year! I rarely rate a movie 5 stars. If it's a great movie that I REALLY enjoyed, it usually gets 4 stars. 5 stars, is when a film can't be any better. The cast, directors and writers achieved 100% on Captain Phillips. Tom Hanks puts himself in roles where you would think it's actually real life. Best movie of the year in my opinion. It's too bad it didn't win the Oscar's that it was nominated for because the cast and crew deserved it.
