Bruce Diones
The film's not perfect-the hand-held camerawork sometimes distracts from the unnerving mood-but it's a good, spooky mind-bender.
Justin Chang
[The] surprises, while cleverly doled out over the film's brisk 88-minute running time, don't entirely offset the general displeasure of spending time with this particular circle of friends, lovers and old flames ...
Bilge Ebiri
Coherence is a gentle film, but you walk away from it with your brain on fire.
Manohla Dargis
What began as a nifty puzzle feels more like a trap. It may be possible to unkink this story, but when characters and performances are as unengaging as these, it's hard to feel motivated to try.
Robert Abele
The conceit is alluringly mind-bending without ever seeming off-puttingly brainy.
Andrew O'Hehir
Slightly too much like an unfolding mathematical puzzle, although an ingenious one that reaches a chilling conclusion.

Gets points for both effort and entertainment value - even if viewers will be hard-pressed to find much coherence in his convoluted plot.
User reviews

Nice surprise! I read all the reviews and trusted the majority, and I wasn't let down! I finely found a movie that had me glued to the outcome. For a while, in the is movie I didn't know if I was on the front side of a violent horror film, that uses scare tactics to entertain but I was wrong in my first thought. I was actually a beautifully thought out story. Fear was used as a tool. Kudos to the writer and director!

A good film...could be better This movie had an excellent premise, and throughout most of it, it absolutely delivered. It was tense, spooky, even managing to be funny now and then. Some have commented that the shaky camera work detracts from your enjoyment of the film. I find that it helps to put you in the right frame of mind. This is a group of every-day people going through a completely bizarre and inexpiable incident. The only problem I have with this movie is the ending. I think it could have had a bit more of a punch. Or, given the "Twilight Zone" feel of the movie, a nice twist would not have gone unappreciated. All that being said, I did enjoy it, and would recommend it to friends. Who knows, maybe I already have.

Inventive low-budget thriller Probably the biggest surprise of 2014, 'Coherence' may not have a large - or even mid-size - budget, but it succeeds because of its well-drawn characters and a storyline that gives even the best 'Twilight Zone' episodes a run for their money. Emily Foxler stars as Em, a woman who attends a dinner party and begins experiencing, along with her boyfriend and their six friends, a mind-bending loop of multiple personalities. Initially believed to be the supernatural result of a passing comet, the mysterious loop is actually - well, I won't ruin the fun. As quiet and somber as 'Coherence' is, it is nothing but fun from start to finish. It's more about how and why these characters escape than it is a question of whether or not they will.

Who behaves/talks like this? Just not believable... Story line gets distracted and when it isn't, it's just childish, dialogue and character decisions are just silly. Some specific examples guy pulls out his brother's quantum physics book and lands on the exact page that describes what they're going through? And their first thought is to kill their alternate universe selves? Then the whole plot of the movie is trying to keep a book that talks about Schrodinger's cat away from their alternate selves?

You're going to want to watch this a second and third time. The whole thing is improvised (outside of major plot points) by the actors and the weird (often creepy) story line and subsequent mystery is magnet and intelligent and fun as hell. This just became my second favorite movie of the year. Pure bliss - I should have just purchased it rather than renting. You're going to want to watch this a second and third time.

The Reader
Academy Awards' winner Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road) delivers a dynamic performance in this "tale of eroticism, secrecy and guilt" (Claudia Puig, USA Today) set in turbulent post-Nazi Germany. Bringing to life the celebrated international novel, Winslet is riveting as Hanna Schmitz, a lonely, working-class woman who experiences a brief but intense affair with a teenage boy. Years later they meet again: Hanna now a defendant in a notorious case and her ex-lover, now a law student, holding the secret to her salvation. Directed by three-time Academy Awards' nominee Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and featuring Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) as the grown man still reeling from Hanna's influence, The Reader is a "moving, romantic and poignant story, (Roger Friedman, Fox News) about the difficult distance between truth and reconciliation
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
In Werner Herzog's new film Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is to scoring drugs while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes) and together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.
