A mishmash of iconography lifted from better movies.
Todd McCarthy
Dark City trades in such weighty themes as memory, thought control, human will and the altering of reality, but is engaging mostly in the degree to which it creates and sustains a visually startling alternate universe.
Ty Burr
City ultimately plays like one of those art-deco dystopian CD-ROM adventures of recent years.
Rita Kempley
[A] stylish hybrid of futuristic thriller and film noir.
Andrea C. Basora
Proyas floods the screen with cinematic and literary references ranging from Murnau and Lang to Kafka and Orwell, creating a unique yet utterly convincing world.
Stephen Hunter
If you don't fall in love with it, you've probably never fallen in love with a movie, and never will.

This is one of those movies that's more concerned with set design motivation than anything that's going on inside the characters' heads.

Top notch, wish the director's cut was available Alex Proyas is one of the underestimated geniuses of our time concerning film. Dark City, to me, is his breakout piece that showcases his eye for style, candy, and cinematic beauty. While there are moments that don't fit with the overall arc of the movie, it is nevertheless filmic brilliance throughout. If there were a genre of Sci-Fi noir, this movie would be the flagship. Wonderfully understated performances, a superb atmosphere of both bleakness and radiance at the same time, and a well told story of the human soul as it perseveres despite its surroundings.

Film nior style sci fi mystery that inspired the movie the Matrix Funny how people call this a Matrix rip off when it came out BEFORE the Matrix. I kept thinking there was something off about the plot and there were too many holes in the movie until I realized the holes were there on purpose and suddenly WHAM, the whole plot was shoved in my face, the holes weren't holes after all. Mind blowing! Amazing acting too.

What Took You So Long? This movie is boss. A modern noir set in...I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it. Along with The Lost Boys, this is one of my favorite Kiefer Sutherland flicks. This is an excellent sci-fi film. I highly recommend it. My only question is what took it so long to reach Google Play? Note to Google: I'm looking to purchase Bound, Strange Days, and An American Werewolf in London. Can you arrange that for me?

The truth is the truth! Amazed at how Dark City and The 13th Floor (watch both) predate The Matrix and no one remembers them! The "One man who knows what's really going on in the world and is the only one who can save it"was lifted from these two. The Matrix is an obvious combination of these two films!
