The only reason to see Dark Shadows is to discover how dire and pointless-how flat-out dreadful-a movie can be even when it has Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helena Bonham Carter attached to its flimsy pretext.
Anthony Lane
This is not so much a coherent movie as it is a long, expensive joke in search of a purpose.
Lisa Kennedy
Mostly Dark Shadows is silly when we're trained to expect slightly richer fun from Burton and Depp.
Christopher Orr
Fans of Depp's past collusions with Burton will find their rewards along the way. But there's a perfunctory vibe to the goings on, a weariness amid the weirdness.
Stephen Whitty
Clearly, they made the movie they wanted to make. It's just not the movie this "Dark Shadows" fan hoped to see.
Stephen Cole
Dark Shadows' only meaningful relationship is between Depp and his audience. He's a persona now, no longer an actor.

How bad is "Dark Shadows"? It makes you long for a "Twilight" movie. That's bad.

Depp out does himself yet again When first my wife seen this movie she had to go see it, and dragged me along with for the fun-tastic event.. never the less and without being a punk and introducing a spoiler, I'll just say that it was better than its original version IMHO and johnny depp was very much the only reason I even agreed to see it, as I'm a huge Disney's Potc fan. It really does deserve the higher than average score. The wife rates it a 5/5 stars.
Not really all that entertaining... I like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but this movie wasn't all that great. The first 10 minutes seemed pretty promising, but the movie comes to a slow down after that. It wasn't a very funny movie with a slight chuckle now and then. I'm confused as to where Danny Elfman actually contributed to the music as his name was in the credits, but honestly I felt the movie had a distinct lack of music and I think that made certain moments weird or somewhat forgettable. If you've seen the commercial you have seen it...
Frighteningly Forgettable! Do not watch this dreckitude...unless you wish to be bored, or want to hate any/all of the people involved....it seems like only Eva Green and/or the Makeup Dep. cared to concoct something humorous/mysterious/watchable...everything else, the dialogue, acting, directing...just looks like no one here was trying at all...even if they were trying to make it 'so bad it's good' (a la Mars Attacks/ Austin Powers) it fails on every level!
All around bad This movie is so bad. Bad script, bad acting. Juvenile humor and jokes that are just stupid. The entire plot makes no sense. This is a waste of money. Plot lines are started from nowhere and just stop sometimes. Looks like they just found a way to make money from drugged out nostalgic hippies.
Good but not good but it is better than twilight This movie is pretty good but rent it. I love joney deep! Though I like him in pirates of the carbon. And for all those people who say this movie is like twilight, you are wrong this movie isn't that bad, but twilight is really stupid I hate it they should'very just kept it as a book. Between dark shadows and twilight Dark shadows is the best. So at least rent this movie not so great for kids but its pretty good!!!!!!!!!
delightfully campy burton/depp fun funny, campy fish-out-of-water story. based on the 1966 gothic television series, an eclectic, talented cast tells the story of barnabas collins (depp), an heir cursed to immortality as a vampire after he spurns a witch's love. buried alive by the townspeople in 18th century new england, he awakes in 1972 determined to restore the family fishery and confront the witch who ruined his life. aided by his modern family - who may have their own curses they're battling - barnabas navigates his new surroundings.
Cool I love Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movies... love Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins... adding Michelle Pfieffer, Helena Bonham Carter, and Chloë Grace Moretz into the cast was/is definitely the best decision(s) that was/were made... the script (in my own opinion) was full of dark humor (which I really like)... Bravo, Tim, bravo...
Its a good movie in its own right. If it hadn't been for the fact that they attached it to a franchise that was already being successful in a completely different way. The original Dark Shadows was much more serious, and Barnibus didn't actually look like a vampire.
Blech! This movie is terribly uneven and nobodies motivations seem grounded in plausibility. A big fat mess. Not funny enough to laugh at, nor dramatic enough to invest in, nor action packed enough to gawk at. Awful movie.
Israel This movie is TERRIBLE! It lacked a decent story line and the movie was not funny at all. No wonder this movie got crushed at the box office. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
It is what it is. Fun for the most part. Fun. Just enjoy it. It's not trying to be a master piece or become a classic. Better than most new rental releases over the past year or two...
Fun and Funny Any movie that involves Tim Burton will not be a waste of time. This was a funny dark comedy loosely based off the old tv show, very loosely, which is a good thing because I have seen the old show and although it is entertaining, it is very very slow... Watch this, you'll laugh.
Meh It was almost entertaining.... Depp made the movie. Loved the fingers lol... movie is not a comedy... but I chuckled a couple times.
What a freaking hoot. Johnny depp is a damm scream. Love the guy as an actor. So blasted talented. Love this movie to death.
Johnny Depp's Acting Never Stops Amazing me The way johnny depp got into the role was just amazing. but i felt that the dark romance really was a let down. the chemistry with Victoria was just not there. But overall, good plot development.
Johnny's no Barnabus I love johnny depp and some the other cast members . I like Tim Burton but the movie was not at all expected. I thought it was going to a least tell us what happened when the real show ended. This was waste of my time and money. Most of all a slap in face to original show's creator and cast members, i would not reccommend it to my worst enemy. Sorry for being so critital but i call it like see it and i am being honest:(

Director Tim Burton brings his unique vision and sensibility to Roald Dahl's classic children's story in this lavish screen interpretation. Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) is the secretive and wildly imaginative man behind the world's most celebrated candy company, and while the Wonka factory is famously closed to visitors, the reclusive candy man decides to give five lucky children a chance to see the inside of his operation by placing "golden tickets" in five randomly selected chocolate bars. Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), whose poor but loving family lives literally in the shadow of the Wonka factory, is lucky enough to obtain one of the tickets, and Charlie, escorted by his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly), is in for the ride of a lifetime as he tours the strange and remarkable world of Wonka with fellow winners, media-obsessed Mike Teavee (Jordan Fry), harsh and greedy Veruca Salt (Julia Winter), gluttonous Augustus Gloop (Philip Wiegratz), and ultra-competitive Violet Beauregarde (AnnaSophia Robb). Over the course of the day, some of the children will learn difficult lessons about themselves, and one will go on to become Wonka's new right hand. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also stars Christopher Lee, James Fox, and Noah Taylor; the book was famously adapted to the screen before in 1971 under the title Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with Gene Wilder as the eccentric candy tycoon.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal's humanity is one weapon no member of the Corps has ever had, and if--with willpower, determination and the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively)--Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he will save the Earth and all of mankind from certain destruction.
