You don't feel bamboozled, fooled, or patronized by District 9, as you did by most of the summer blockbusters. You feel winded, shaken, and shamed.
Tom Huddlestone
Perhaps we're witnessing a new dawn for politically engaged sci-fi and horror, with Blomkamp as a latter-day George Romero. Either way, this is a stunningly impressive debut.
David Edelstein
To call this the best shrimp-from-outer-space South African apartheid allegory ever made does not begin to do it justice. But it's a start.
Ben Mankiewicz
This is a great movie.
Ben Lyons
What an achievement in filmmaking.
J. R. Jones
The backstory beats the hell out of the present-tense plot, a routine affair in which a well-meaning doofus working for the Man is infected with a virus, starts turning into an alien himself, and falls in with the oppressed creatures.

My favorite sifi movie Awesome movie. Great acting, visual effects, concept, and it's very believable. A must see. Don't know why people say it's a bad movie because Wikus is ignorant and cowardly. That's how most people would be if that happened to them. Put yourself in his shoes. Anyways definitely see it.

Well thought out and a sober look at possible alien encounters A good choice if you don't want anything too heavy, but aren't looking for a comedy either. I hadn't seen or heard much about this film and in the end I found it to be surprisingly thoughtful. The premiss that aliens find themselves trapped on earth due to our ridiculous propensity for paperwork, bureaucracy, and healthy doses of prejudice and violence, is true to the classic messages of social science fiction. The storyline was well thought out. The protagonist was a bit shallow in the first part of the movie which had me worried that we'd never really see any character development that would make me want to watch past my first bathroom break. However, I think this was the point. Portraying his transformation from a shell of a person into an alien sympathizer with more depth and tenacity worked well to develop the characters and plot in harmony.
really cool movie I think its a great alien movie. totally different from all other ones in its genre. cause most alien movies they are badguys and its all the same or they are misunderstood goodguys which are usually lame. if you enjoyed elysium then you'll enjoy this. sharlto copley character may not be as badass as in elysium but gota love it when he starts using alien weapons which are really baddass with each one unique.

Alien Apartheid and Exo-Xenophobia Inverts the norm of alien movies. Instead of invading, the aliens are refugees on Earth. Presented in a way that seems believable, not just with the plot surrounding racism and un-subtle parallels with South African Apartheid, but also with documentary-style shaky-cam footage. It's Sci-Fi that makes you uncomfortable and makes you learn something.
A sci-fi film with heart. So many science-fiction films pit us against them. The humans versus the aliens. This film takes a rather interesting approach in making humans the bad guys for once. The main character and hero is a human, of course, but him learning more about the aliens and doing what he knows has to be done makes the whole story all the more intesting. It's not the same old sci-fi I'm accustomed to, and I like it for that.

So much more than you expect I went into watching this without any background and was astonished at the depth and reality of storytelling. Sure some people hate allegory but it's often the only way to give us perspective on real world events with minimal prejudice. I thought everything about this film was masterful.

About time Finally an alien movie that is accurate. Why is it that every alien race would be bent on destroying the earth or mankind? Doesn't it make more sense that they would be like us and be cautious and curious and want to learn from fellow beings. This movie did it right. In fact its so good that if I didn't know it was a movie I probably would have believed it was real.
