Barely diverting.
J. R. Jones
It's all pretty dumb, and it marks a career low for director Neil Burger, who's made some first-class indie dramas from his own scripts.
Joshua Rothkopf
The first film adapted from Veronica Roth's generically dystopian book series arrives with a sludgy, gray-hued plop.
Wesley Morris
The climactic chases, shootouts, and fistfights have been staged, filmed, and edited with insobriety. Visual clarity shouldn't be too much to ask from these movies, even if they fail to achieve ideological coherence.
Michael Sragow
Jackhammer music and sound design are all that hold the action scenes together.
David Edelstein
If you can forget what it's saying, Divergent is fairly entertaining.

The performances -- namely from stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James and Kate Winslet in a juicy supporting role -- always make the movie watchable and often quite engaging.

I to be honest I was a little disappointed with the movie. I love the book. But what I actually really like more about the book was the fighting and kissing scenes. The directors should have put more details from the book some of the characters weren't in there. I'm not saying that they should put the movie exactly like the book but it the movie would have been better if they actually have put more of the kissing scenes. BTW I loved how the actors did. Theo is HOT to the touch!!!!!!!!!!
love it What i dont understand is that people talk sooo much crap.. bad acting like really like dude can you act yoy think you could do a better job.. ive been following shailene since abc family im glad to see her do action its very exicting.. theo is soo sexy 💛💛💛.. people take reviewing like its there job.. if you dont like it keep it moving.. good job cant wait for insurgent 😁😁😁😁
I'm a Teenager and I'm Confused Thats the basic premise of this movie, just like the Hunger Games. Teenagers are confused. We get it. Teenagers are rebellous. We get it. Teenagers don't know where they fit into society. We get it. The older generation is trying to keep everyone down. We don't need 2hrs plus to figure that out. The acting wasn't horrendous, and the dystopian plot is original, but the fight the power teenager genre is overused. These books seems like Roth saw the money in teenage angst stories and ran with the idea. I feel old now.
Divergent is amazing I love divergent divergent if life i love the book series divergent insurgent and alligent and i can wait for the other too movies i cant wait for i admire veronica roth for creating these amazing stories come to life THANK YOU VERONICA ROTH,Shailene woodley, theo james and ansel elgort!!!!!!! ☺😊😀💖💖💖💖👌👌👌 #DIVERGENT fear dosent shut you down it wakes you up
Okay, but could be better The movie "Divergent" was very well done, if you hadn't read the book. The book "Divergent" by Veronica Ross was executed much better with more detail with Will's and Christina's relationship, as well as Tobias's (Four's) and Tris's., along with other details about the Initiation "fun" that the film writers could have easily gone into more depth with it.
Best movie ever Stop saying it is nothing like the book. Books and movies are not suppose to be exactly alike. This movie is amazing and I can see why it is similar to Hunger Games. It has a futuristic society. So stop saying it is horrible with bad acting. Go live life instead of criticizing great movies and making people think it is horrible without watching it.
Amazing. I really enjoyed the movie. I prefer it over the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is just confusing. I really like Shailene better than Jennifer. The sountrack is perfect. They really did a good job on the movie. I love the books so much. Read every single one of them. There is so many great actors and actresses. There are many good looking people in this movie. Like I said the books were amazing. Congrats to Veronica. You are a amazing author. Can't wait for Insurgent in March. Love you Shailene and Theo.
DIVERGENT If you relax, suspend your disbelief, and pay attention to the premise; which seems to be a possible evolutionary path for humanity; this is a very entertaining movie....It does have a few flaws: most evident being that is depicts a lack of even subtlety perceivable chemistry between any of the supposed romantically connected couples. This seems to be a script writing or directorial oversight. Even though the book is light on the romance it does describe existing and budding romance between characters. I mean I saw no significant interactions between characters that indicate intimacy between established couples or passion /desire among young characters who became couples. They all seem like one large Amish community with no PDA despite the premise of 5 distinct social behavior precepts. With that said I was very entertained and enjoyed the show.
To be honest; this was GREAT! I'm a big fan of movies that actually stay true to the book to some degree and of course, trail off the beaten path a bit but overall retain the quality seen in the novel that makes it great. Divergent did just that. I avoided seeing the film after it was released due to alot of negative feedback and I read the book a few months ago and loved it. I am now in love with this movie. It really captured what I loved about the book: the very slow build up of a connection between Tris and Four, a more direct insight into the twisted mind of Jeanine...but my favorite character in the series is Four himself. Theo James really stands out to me; not because of his good looks but because he has this kind of appeal that makes you think he's a serial killer and then out of nowhere, he shows his humanity. He's a complex and twisted character and it's beautiful to watch Theo James bring this to life. The fight scene between Tris and Four was a real win for me because the book made the fight so raw and the film stayed true to it. It was a beautiful moment. So bravo to the film! I know many people may not like it but trust me, this is definitely good!
Great! Highly recommended!! I love both the book and the movie. I will admit the movie left out some good very important parts. But, over all I think the acting was most of the time spot on. I don't understand people that read the book and watched the movie saying that the acting was bad. I will admit some characters could have been portrayed better. But that could be the movie writers fault not the actors. I think Sheighlene Woodly was very good as Tris. I think she fit the description nicely. But book is great, movie is good.
Bad Acting, bad plot, regurgitated boring story. You will find better acting and originality in power rangers. Lead actors were terrible and unbelievable, plot made no sense, bad guys did bad things for no reason other then to give this mindless story a conflict. Avoid unless you are another brainless teenage girlobot. You will know them by the 5 stars they gave this trash. One of them said hippie like they have a clue what that is in their common core diseased empty heads.
