As a director, Gordon-Levitt demonstrates considerable technical flair through stylistic flourishes and coaxes great performances out of his co-stars.
Christy Lemire
Joseph Gordon-Levitt turns the gym-tan-laundry routine into an art form with Don Jon, his vibrant and viciously profane directorial debut.
Richard Roeper
Offbeat, frank and often surprising gem.
Peter Rainer
The movie becomes increasingly soft-edged and sappy.
Michael Sragow
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's debut as a writer-director-actor resembles a porn addict's Groundhog Day, and not in a good way.
Mary F. Pols
At least 80% of it is snappy, droll fluff, while the other 20% is what you get when you persuade Julianne Moore to be in your movie: in a word, better.

Gordon-Levitt's characters feel real and "Don Jon" is a convincing, authentic, funny, modern romance.

Genius Genius movie! My friends think it's tasteless because of the whole church thing and sex ... but it's a movie! I thought it was hilarious. People think it's funny when Kat Williams jokes about "nigga" this, "nigga" that, sex, smoking weed, and not paying your bills. Now THAT is tasteless! On the contrary, this movie had a great moral when it starts to wrap up. Towards the end the character starts to see more in life and starts to make sense of everything. Great movie in my opinion.

Life Change. I love the line in the movie where he says "I'm just being honest." Not many movies these days are that intimate about shameless habits. If you can not handle honesty, you will not like this movie. Go watch something fake like the Notebook. Men think about sex a lot, you can't change that. But it's better a man know what is realistic and what is unrealistic. This is a story of a Jersey boy finding that out and his whole life changes.

Worth the wait The movie has a beautiful story, but it waits to reveal itself to the very end. It deals with serious issues without getting serious, points out the flaws we all have, and redeems one man and one woman to new, impossible heights. I adore Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an actor and film maker. I thought he wrote a beautiful love story that is thought provoking.

This movie is raw Not for the sensitive but deals with the Plague of porn from a semi spiritual secular Catholic vantage. Something to think about, I am a protestant so the critique of the Catholic faith in this movie is actually a good one but is not replaced with biblical Christianity but a healthier view of sex. While not ultimate it is better than what the main character starts out with and shows the destructive nature of porn without being preachy. Hard to do and I appreciated what the writer was doing here.

Moral of the story I can see how many would think this movie as horible smut. But really, the ture moral of the story is that this man had to learn how to enjoy love and real sex, not just porn. He had to learn the ture contention with the right partner makes sex enjoyable. Making love not just sex. I guess you have to see the psychology aspect of the main character.

It ends happy not funny This is not a comedy movie in the modern day thinking of things, but rather an old style greco-roman comedy masterpiece. It depicts the struggles of man's corrupted vision disguised with modern comedic outbursts but detailed with repetitive scenes and breaks from those scenes with moments filled with soul. It is dramatic but ends beautifully describing what it means to make love and then to fall in love.

Porn-addicted Guido achieves emotional transcendence? Sure, why not. If I wasn't a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson, I would've been very skeptical of this movie. The premise seems gimmicky, like a plot device just to put the character in awkward situations. But the movie actually is more than a comedy; there's a genuine plot and some great too it. Funny, entertaining, a pretty solid movie actually, not mindless fart jokes like I expected. Johansson's character steals the show for sure.

Well done A really good movie, throw out your expectations and you will see more than just a guy addicted to porn. If blockbustee movies are great novels this is that novelette you can read for free online. Few characters with repetitive/small scale setting (i.e. apartment, dining room) and good performance by Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. Hope JGL and HitRecord create more films.

Saying prayers doing pull ups, this character is awesome! This movie I finally rented and enjoyed watching. The sister was great, always there on the phone never says anything till later. And the whole cool dude in class, perfect side story. Mature audiences should appreciate this latest film by +Joseph Gordon-Levitt. #movietriviatuesday

Starts off strong and then withers away Very well directed, but poor handling of the second half ultimately made this a bit of a time-waster. Basically, the script totally forgets how to handle a hero's journey halfway through, and leaves things to just sort of fall into place. The one moment of satisfaction (singing in the car) is cut short, and the curious final church scene is left hanging.
Ya I know, a '4' right?! Allright heres the deal.. I had zero expectations for this film, and after the first act i was dreading it... I mean for me its everything i deplore about what our society has evolved into HOWEVER this was in fact, very cleverly, the point of the film. I can't really say more without detracting, and i would like people to watch this BECAUSE it is actually of substance.. Its also very cleverly done where the sexual scenes are never shown, just implied, save for one tiny and very elegant scene..

Slow moving, Not Really Funny If your eyes can stomach this to the end you see the deeper meaning of the movie. However getting to the end is excruciating ! The movie has no plot, and the depiction of NJ is just absurd. They could have cast The Situation from the Jersey Shore as the main char and would have been fine. Better yet just watch The Jersey Shore and you basically have that show in a movie. Terrible.
