Most sci-fi movies offer escape, a holiday from homework, but Dune is as difficult as a final exam. You have to cram for it.
Dave Kehr
The problem is that the imagery isn't rooted in any story impulse, and so its power dissipates quickly.
Variety Staff
Dune is a huge, hollow, imaginative and cold sci-fi epic.
Lynch's third feature may have been a commercial disaster, but it gets under your skin and is marked by unforgettable images and an extraordinary soundtrack.
Roger Ebert
This movie is a real mess, an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time.
Janet Maslin
Several of the characters in Dune are psychic, which puts them in the unique position of being able to understand what goes on in the movie.

addicting!!! i am a 36 year old good looking chick!!!! LOL.an why I say that is? because everyone who sees me read one of my many dune universe novels or watching the SYFY channel mini series from 2000 in which I own on DVD.can't believe that I like this nerdy, geeky sci-fi stuff! and I should be reading romance and chick kind of books! but,I am in love with all things dune!! it is quite amazing!. and have seeing this movie for the 10th time it never gets old and love it more and more and everyone should see it!

Luv it! This is not the book, but it made me read the book. I'm into all the series now, it's good stuff. The movie is bad/good/silly but it has a great feel. They don't make these kinds of movies anymore. It's nothing like the miniseries on tv. Just watch this movie. It's a love it or hate it kind of thing. Fear is the mind killer!

Visionary Not the majesty and subtlety in the book... But visionary in its own way. The first half has ground breaking visuals so profound that this director was asked by George Lucas to direct the 2nd Star Wars film. The ending to the Dune movie is deeply disappointing... It was a rush job as the studio took final cut rights, stripping the director of the chance to finish and polish his film.
Solid 2/5 stars I would give the movie two stars for two simple reasons: my love for Sir Patrick Stewart, and the fact that the special effects were very well done. If you have read the book prior to seeing this film, you should prepare yourself for disappointment. Many stories are left out or mutilated to the point where the viewer doesn't understand the significance of many actions in the plot. A very humorous example is the fact that the Atreides mentat is given poison in the book, and unknowingly eats the antidote with each meal as a method of ensuring he can be killed if needed. In the movie, the antidote comes from petting a white cat. I wish I were making this up. To someone who hasn't read the book, I would imagine the whole movie is confusing since it jumps from one scene to another without explaining much. Yeah it's a long book, but for a run time of over 2 hours a much better job could have been done in directing and adapting the story for the movie. Overall it's still worth watching so fans of the book can see what a mess it is. It's also a joy to see some of the faces of those in the book -- although casting Sir Patrick Stewart as Gurney is a little odd.
Review sucks This is seriously the worst review of this movie i have ever read. I love this movie and have it in almost every format that it has come out in. I think you really need to get someone who knows what it's really about to rewrite it.

Still relevant, still important The theme is classic and will leave you inspired, wanting to start a revolution. You can easily make parallels with holy scripture from different religions. Doesn't matter if that's intentional or not. This movie should be purchased simply because you'll watch it more than once. As far as special effects go, this movie made excellent use of the technology available. As far as editing goes, there aren't wasted scenes. This movie really is a masterpiece.
Good I first watched this when I was 5. So cool. One of my dad's favorites. He loves the Dune books.
I am a huge fan but... This version of the movie is lacking. At least the longer version has a vague semblance of the storyline. The book is WAY better but the long version of this movie IS very good.
Excellent movie The books are better as most readers will usually say, but the cinematic approach to the book was well done for this film, dark, and has its own unique flavor, but understandably not for everyone
If you read the book, must see Long movie, but a mind bender. If you can visualize the star trek universe, this universe isn't much more of a stretch. I like it.
