Any thematic audacity is snuffed out by action sequences that you can now buy at Dollar General.
Matthew Kassel
Like Max, the movie has to keep moving, and Mr. Blomkamp lets you fill in the gaps yourself as it progresses. Or not.
Christopher Orr
Though Elysium is a testament to Blomkamp's extraordinary skill as a visual filmmaker, it does not speak nearly so well for his gifts as a writer.
David Edelstein
The action is bludgeoning.
Adam Nayman
A cautionary tale about the dangers of squandering resources that wastes its own talent.
Peter Rainer
If Elysium is an example of how recession-era Hollywood intends to dramatize the rift between the haves and the have-nots, let's hope the studios don't also bring back Smell-O-Rama.

Pretty great! I had low expectations before I began to watch this because I wasn't a huge fan of "District 9"and this movie had the same director. Well thank god I gave it a chance and rented it because it is a very cool, eye opener, futuristic thriller. I recommend this movie to ppl of all kinds because really we can all relate to the story! WATCH IT!

Cut and dry Not one of Damon's greatest. I only gave it two stars instead of one because of the ending. The action was okay but could have been more developed. The plot seemed to have too many angles. Pieces that came and went quickly with little significance tying them all together. But hey, if you love sci-fi futuristic movies this will satisfy that craving with ease.

Average Futuristic Movie Typical movie with a semi exciting plot. I expected a much better movie from Matt Damon. My real gripe is that it almost have me a headache when watching the multitude of action sequences because the camera mover around so much and so fast that I couldn't focus an on any one thing. A lot or movies mask the fake fighting with chanting camera angles and such which is normally fine but this one proved to be a little much for me. All in all, I feel it was worth the $5 to see it but glad I skipped the theater.

Excellent, must watch movie This engrossing and fast-paced movie, though set in the future, serves as an excellent commentary and criticism of the world of today, particularly with regard to immigration laws, extrajudicial assassinations via done strikes, and wealth inequality (especially between first world and third world countries). The movie serves as a scathing condemnation of the human callousness. Some of the technology was too unbelievable (e.g. programming Elysium in assembly language), hence 4 stars instead of 5.

I hoped for more The premise is fascinating, and I like Matt Damon, so I went into this one with high expectations. I don't completely regret seeing it, but it feels like they wasted an opportunity. The movie takes its time setting up an intriguing and complex world, only to fill this world with generic, overdone fight scenes featuring a comically evil bad guy.

The characters fail the story... I wanted to like this movie but I couldnt. The story was good, setting good, but the characters were horrible. I would say that they were one dimensional however many failed to accomplish any modicum of persona. There were a few moments where the cinematography captured the ambition of the script but there were more experiences where the film was tastelessly overdone.

Grade A movie Mike the racist your f**** stupid you you care so Mich about races go d** of something racist is only what you make it an you good it put of proportion grow up an to home... I don't care whether your black mexican Asian white Jewish or whatever if toy do wrong then your a B**** This movie is Bad 2 the A** I should be a movie Cedric

More on the bad side. This is totally not one of Matt Damon's greatest movies. The plot wasn't that well developed. Give it some time, and there's a chance it'll be above your expectations. But, if you're one of the people, whose eager and has great taste for futuristic; this is definitely a personal recommendation; mouth watering, must see movie. All together, this might below half of my expectations.

WAY MORE than your typical sci-fi action flick! This movie will make you laugh, cry AND have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. This is NOT just your typical sci-fi action/adventure movie...it has something for everyone, and most importantly, Elysium carries an extremely important message for us all...about what is and should be most important in life. Don't miss an opportunity to see this film!

Decent movie, entertaining watch The movie wasn't "incredible" by any means, but it definitely was an entertaining watch. I just didn't feel too "attached" to the characters which made the movie feel slightly pointless for me to watch. I'd still recommend at least renting it for sure, you'll enjoy it if you like action movies.

Total garbage Blomkamp's sophomore film is complete and utter nonsense. From S. African Sharlto Copley mouthing off slang only S. Africans know and completely overacting to a clueless Jodie Foster, poor script and more. The hand of Peter Jackson who obviously helped Blomkamp in his debut, is deeply lacking here. Avoid at all costs
Simply a bad movie This film was poorly made. The special effects were mainly shaking the camera, horrible script, and an extremely offensive communistic message. I'm fully aware that most Hollywood movies have a right wing or left wing message behind it but this one is simply offensive. And I'm not rating or reviewing this movie off of the message it sends, but instead on how poorly it was made. Waste of money.
Big disappointment Elysium is a great example of how to take an interesting story idea and bury it in a bad movie. The basic story would have made a good movie. I didn't expect much from Matt Damon ... but Jodie Foster? I would say her talent was wasted on this movie but she apparently left it at home the day she shot her scenes. It's a pity though. Her character could've been the most interesting in a well written screen play.
Decent sci-fi I enjoyed the movie well enough. Original story that has an interesting take on society a 100+ years into the future. You naturally have to suspend your disbelief and don't over analyze this movie. The scenes where they change code are "interesting". Watch the movie and a lot of you will see what I mean. Worth the rental.

Bad Sci-fi Done Badly This movie has every cliche in the book. Bad story, repetitive film score, predictable characters. Do no waste your time or money. Found myself looking at my phone more than the movie. As great as the directors previous film "District 9" was this film doesn't even come close. And how stupid do you think your audience is... wow everyone on Elysium is fair haired and white but everyone in the slums of earth is some kind of "minority" except for ...oh I don't know... the main character!!!!! If you want to make a movie about inequality, maybe you should consider giving the main role to an actor who belongs to a race you feel is being marginalized.
