There are sterling concert performances by several bands in peak form.
Ann Hornaday
A delirious piece of pop ephemera, a time capsule set on the cusp between the Summer of Love and the Day the Music Died.
Bruce Westbrook
What's most revealing and human about Festival Express are its candid looks at artists bonding aboard the choo-choo.
Steve Morse
It's the overnight jam sessions that steal the show.
Eleanor Ringel Gillespie
Here's a chance to listen to the soundtrack for the social upheaval of the late '60s and early '70s.
Larry Rodgers
A treasure for baby-boomer rockers and a miniature history lesson for younger music fans.

This is the film's most interesting angle: the tension that arises as rabble-rousers fight with cops and rail against the promoters who dared to charge $16 for a daylong concert.

Gov't Mule - Live at the Mountain Jam Festival
Music

With 2 million paid song downloads through their site MuleTracks, seven critically acclaimed studio records already released, a handful of DVDs and live albums, plus an ever-expanding fanbase and sold-out coast-to-coast tours, Gov't Mule could easily rest on its laurels. Yet when they're one of the hardest working bands in rock history. Haynes explains, "We want By A Thread to be a surprise, so we've made a point not to play any of them live until our fans can get the full impact of the new material." The Band Closed off Saturday night at the Mountain Jam Festival with their first show scheduled in 2011. Frontman Warren Haynes promised the crowd a crazy night, and didnt disappoint, leading off with Railroad Boy and Thorazine Shuffle. Mule played a lengthy number of covers in the first set, including ZZ Tops Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings, The Whos Wont Get Fooled Again, and closed the first set with Black Sabbaths War Pigs. The second set also featured several covers, including the lead-off Money and Have a Cigar by Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones Angie. The highlight of the night was a lengthy 32/20 Blues, which featured Cody Dickinson on electric washboard, Luther Dickinson on guitar, and Hook Herrera on harmonica.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - Live at the moe. Down Festival
Music

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals grew from the roots of rock & roll in what some might call the old-fashioned way. Their sound? They're a neoclassic rock & roll band possessing bona fide chops, a natural sense of dynamics and a palate containing all the useful colors, and these qualities allow them to stretch out onstage, to riveting effect. Perhaps their greatest asset is the ability to transcend genres, never content to settle into one predefined sound. GPN were once the up-and-coming darlings of the modern jazz and blues scene, receiving incessant comparisons to Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams. Yet their magnetic live shows and dedication to the road earned the band a warm welcoming from the jam-band community, leading to two nominations at the 2006 Jammys. At the same time, their acclaimed album This is Somewhere is a testament to the bands true roots pure rock music.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - Live at the Mountain Jam Festival

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are like a modern-day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa Sticky Fingers. The proof is there for all to hear on the bands third album for Hollywood Records, hitting this spring, and marks an artistic breakthrough for a vital young band caught in the act of fulfilling its immense promise. Little wonder that Grace and her cohorts have chosen to title it, directly and emphatically, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals.
