Michael B. Jordan is simply brilliant in his portrayal of Grant, whom Coogler presents as a generally happy, if complex and somewhat troubled young man.
Bruce Ingram
The intimacy of debut writer-director Ryan Coogler's approach to the film and the no-frills, believably real quality of the main performances combine to drive the senselessness of Oscar's killing...

Writer-director Ryan Coogler's [film is an] assured and evenhanded debut.
Lisa Kennedy
It's hard not to watch Fruitvale Station with a coiled dread... Yet, Coogler's greatest achievement may be in reminding us that Grant was a work in progress with people who loved him in spite of...
Wesley Morris
You wonder if Coogler would have felt freer had Grant somehow lived that night, if the director weren't put in a position where he felt the need to honor the dead by bringing him to dramatic life....
Geoff Pevere
We feel the death on the platform so acutely not because it's a stupid act of randomness, but hardly untypical racist violence, but because we've come to love this man.

Great First Movie Director Ryan Coogler did a fantastic job knocking his first directorial film out of the park. I can only strive to have my first film grip the audience as much as he has with this. Michael B. Jordan (one of my favorite actors since Chronicles) was a fantastic choice to play the lead character. The emotion he brought to the roll made you feel everything, both good and bad, in Oscar Grant's final hours on this planet. I would definitely vote, both Ryan and Michael for choices in the next Academy Awards!

B rated movie that was Awful The real story behind this movie was a tragic event that should have never happened it's just too bad they made a cheap horrible movie out of it. I'm not sure how everyone thinks this is a great film as the quality is worse then most B rated movies. The story behind the movie had potential to be made into a great film but it was done in such a horrible way.
Fruitvale Station I believe the Director built up the main character too much. I understand that you want to show he was kind, caring and compassionate as the character was based on a real person. However I believe the director made him out to be so compassionate, so respectful, so loving he in fact did injustice to the real person and actually made me lose compassion for the main character in the movie Not in the real life event.

Loved it Being from this area and literally was on the BART that night and later following the story it was emotional...but im happy how it was portrayed...it was hard to watch...especially in the theater in Oakland where I originally saw it...this movie really could have been a big fail but it was in good hands and as i said im happy how the movie came out...so watch it:-)

Tragic but excellent One of the best and most powerful movies of 2013. Based on the true story of Oscar Grant, the film shows both the good and bad of this young man who had his life taken too early. Great acting, especially by Jordan and Spencer, and first time director Coogler does a fantastic job. Highly recommended.

A tearful review I can't say that I enjoyed this film although it truly is a great cinematic work. Our people shouldn't have to needlessly die for good storytelling. I've never cried so much for someone I never knew. No words can really express what I'm feeling right now. It's just not fair. It's not even a fair trade, a good film for a good human. But his story needs to be told. I highly recommend it.
Favorite of the year This movie was so amazing to me! I just really loved the way that it was directed and the actors were excellent, especially the handsome Michael B. Jordan....I didn't really know what it was about before watching it but I am so glad I did. Oscar's story stayed with me long after my tears dried and after I left the theater. The ending was so sad, and I shocked and maddened that the officer didn't really pay for what he did. Anyways, the movie is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone.

Fruitvale Station lacks emotional depth To be completely honest, this movie was a disappointment. It was a character study, which is fine, but character studies require emotional depth and this film had little. Michael B. Jordan gave a routine performance, but the standout one came from Octavia Spencer, the Oscar-winning actress. As Ryan Coogler's first effort, I guess it was OK, but considering the amount of buzz given this film, I expected more.

Straight b.s.!...sorry spoiler included If you wanna watch this movie skip to the last twenty minutes and you have seen everything. Unless u wanna c a random dude walk up to a total stranger hand her his phone to let her talk to his grandma and then stupidly walk away to leave his phone with a total stranger while he harrasses his old boss. Oh or watch an idiot pick up a random dead dog off the street and rock it. Creepy like...oh n my favorite was seeing this douchbag play quote unquote gangsta at the jail but goes beserk cause mommy wont hug?ew

They had a goal ...To tell this young man's story, to show the nuances of humanity and that "stats" are really flesh and blood and they did that. Though they dramatized some elements, the message is clear. He was someone's son, father, boyfriend... and he deserved his second chance at life like anyone else. But the value for his life wasn't there. The direction is clean, and concise. Micheal B. Jordan is amazing in this role. He's definitely one of my favs. Good film.

Sad and amazing I've been through it. The racism, the drugs, the violence. I used to sell crack on the corner just to get my fix for heroin, I never in my life thought of do that at 14 years old but I did. My moms kicked me out multiple times cause of skip school to go push, but after 3 years of doing that I met an amazing girl and had a handsom little man with her, now were engaged and I'm almost 3 months clean(not much I know) but every day I wake up nd think god for what I've been through cause it's made me. Great movie
