Richard McGuinness
The fact that [it] isn't very funny and, like its 80-year-old heroic, long outlives its necessary life, is less important than the fact that the characters frequently react gently or like credible...
Dave Kehr
Simpleminded, but it's fairly inoffensive, at least until Ashby lingers over the concentration-camp serial number tattooed on Gordon's arm. Some things are beyond the reach of whimsy.
Derek Adams
It is most successful when it keeps to the tone of an insane fairystory set up at the beginning of the movie.
Vincent Canby
[Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon] both are so aggressive, so creepy and off-putting.
Roger Ebert
The visual style makes everyone look fresh from the Wax Museum, and all the movie lacks is a lot of day-old gardenias and lilies and roses in the lobby, filling the place with a cloying sweet...
Kelly Rusinack
Can't imagine going thru life without this This film is unconventional, the plot unique, the characters quirky, but the subject really comes down to the commonplace: embrace life, own your existence, dance to the beat of your own drum, and love will find you. An unspoken but immensely important plot element is Maude's survival of the Holocaust, informing her lust for living and dying on her own terms. Harold shares that independent spirit. Their capers are hilariously off-beat. H&M appeals mostly to the literati.

It's a dark comedy so much in love with this movie. sure its dark but memorable in every way. and with the Cat Stevens soundtrack- outstanding. have it on VCR, now DVD. may just buy the soundtrack. i relate to him and his obsession w/death and to her w/her love for life. you either get it, or your don't. more about living then dying. the song "trouble' is so fitting for this movie. pick a rainy day to stay in, curl up and get lost in this movie for a couple of hours. you won't regret it.
Go And love some more I've never lived I've died a few times. Does wise words from Harold, Lets us know the value of life. Maude is simply a blessing when she talks about the daisies, And her beloved sun flowers. Her lesson on attaching our selves to things is filled also with wisdom. If we could truly not let the world judge us too much I do believe we could all be happier people.
Classic Film Why Ruth Gordon did not win an Oscar is beyond me. Her character teaches us all about the real love of life. She was a character to fall in love every minute of the film. I have seen the movie very many times and each time I discover a new twist to the tale of life and love found and lost. Superior direction...stellar performances make this gem a real classic.
