Being a hardcore cinephile (like Scorsese) might add a layer of enjoyment, but it certainly isn't a prerequisite for walking in the door. A sense of wonder, however, is.
J. R. Jones
Scorsese transforms this innocent tale into an ardent love letter to the cinema and a moving plea for film preservation.
Joe Baltake
'Hugo': Scorsese's humbling hommage to his favorite art
Cath Clarke
It might be curtains for celluloid, but Scorsese, a boyish 69, clearly isn't leaving the stage any time soon. He directs every film with the passion of his first. And it shows.
Joe Morgenstern
Thematic potency and cinematic virtuosity -- the production was designed by Dante Ferretti and photographed by Robert Richardson -- can't conceal a deadly inertness at the film's core.

Great, but the book's better Excellent story, beautifully shot. One complaint; Scorsese unnecessarily changed some critical elements, significantly diminishing a key character's strength.

A Maturbatory Disgrace Scorsese made this move for himself. It's an homage to how great a director he is and the pioneering vision of Lumiere. In the meantime, he forgot to make a watchable movie. Even the people who liked this movie admit it's slow. If you fail to get hooked into "sense of wonder" movies, and you don't find slient films or movies about orphans endearing, then you will turn this piece of garbage off halfway through like I did. I thought much more hightly of Scorsese before I saw this one.
New favorite film? Scorsese goes back to the roots of film to bring us a wonderful, sweet, thoughtful, thought-provoking story about the purpose of our lives and the families we find. It's a great film with NO unsympathetic characters, NO wasted moments, a tight story, and a well-choreographed ending. One for the history books!
BLAH I LIKE THE LITTLEKID CHARACTERS!! BUT THE MOVIE WAS HORRIBLE & BORING!! I EVEN TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO WATCH IT WITH MY KIDS AND I EITHER FELL ASLEEP OR MADE THEM TAKE IT OUT IDK IT'S JUST NOT AN INTERESTING MOVIE 2 US!!!
Decent They speak of adventure, mystery, and excitement. However, Hugo is dull, plain, and lame throughout. In my opinion, the movie never really starts.
Pretty good i believe I have just started to watch and not bad so far. If wanting some thing good to watch this may be good for you to view.
Little Overrated First half is very engaging and has a fun magical feel to it. But half way through it resorts to long scenes where characters are left explaining what the story is about so we can understand. Really took the magic away for me. But I'd still recommend regardless.
WTF what a waste of time an money... it's because of movies like this fun get pirated ....
Good movie I loved it! The ending touched it<3 well directed and I love the originality of the plot
Great I'd suggest this app to everyone, a great family movie which will remain in your mind for a couple of days. I would watch this over and over without getting bored.
Really good. Lots don't understand how this got an award. With its well direction screenplay and just how the movie ends up till so.nothing you didn't realize would happen is a huge part of the important plot. Which is why it had a its awards and fame. Even if the story doesn't fit you, you have to see all the other stuff behind it.
Awesome! I dont know why people are saying its boring....not every film has to have explosions and criminals and gunfights. Absolutely brilliant, well done.
