This novel premise quickly gives way to lots of chaotic action, though there are numerous incidental pleasures throughout.
James Berardinelli
It's no fun. Everyone takes this way too seriously.
Rafer Guzman
What the film doesn't have is a sense of humor.
David Hiltbrand
The special effects are pretty good and the fight scenes are adequate. But the film loses steam in the fourth act ...
Tom Russo
Stitches up Aaron Eckhart's chiseled face like a baseball cover, sticks him in a hoodie, and promptly crashes, thanks to a complete inability to resist awful, overdone dialogue and faux-lofty exposition.
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky
If the film is made with the understanding that campiness needs to be straight-faced to be funny, then are its "unintentional" laughs really that unintentional?

There are some clean, comic-book compositions and neat architectural interlacing, but the blinkered screenplay and indifferent performances fail to lift the eschatology and self-searching off the page.

Good at what it does If you go in expecting a masterpiece of cinema quite frankly you are an idiot. The movie basically stole the plot from van helsing but the acting was better and the special effects were good. Dialogue pretty bad too but if you want to see gargoyles fighting demons hey its not bad.

THE CRITICS CHOP THIS MOVIE AND I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE FOR THE HORROR/ACTION FANS! Yes i really did like this movie it had great special effects and the storyline wasn't that bad either and the acting was a lot better than i expected! THE PRODUCERS OF UNDERWORLD DID A GREAT JOB ON THIS FILM!!!!!!!

Meh. CGI is mediocre. Story is intriguing (the potential of the plot is better than the delivery), but not engaging enough. Fight scenes were confusing because of all of the constant demon flames. Didn't care for the characters, and the ending was entirely too predictable. It was a turn your mind off and blow up monsters sort of movie.
Excellent movie I really liked this movie I was hesitant to watch it because after reading some of the reviews I thought it would be boring but not at all the complete opposite. It was action packed it was based on Frankenstein's monster but not the regular Frankenstein flick this is more of today's Frankenstein and its very good. Excellent special effects lots of action in every scene. Even has a soft spot and has its heartwarming scenes sad at times but really worth watching. The music was perfect very suspenseful.
Much better than expected. Mary Shelley, writing in the original story, had the monster say "I am malicious because I am miserable." Perhaps this is why the monster has evolved in popular culture to be transcendent over the principal character, the so-called Dr. Frankenstein, who has devolved into a nondescript footnote in this modern take. I found this version on the better path frankly and enjoyed watching it for the buried details of its current iteration. Plus great CGI and robust action. Worthy of more consideration.
What happened? I'll be the first to admit that new spins on old stories is sometimes a good idea. That being said, this movie hits an amazing low for me. Bad story, bad acting, effects were tolerable at best but when did Frankenstein get hot? I'm not gay by any streach but I thought that he was dug out from a grave (that's a corpse for you slow folks.) and a fresh brain placed in the rotting corps. Where did all these other scars come from? Was the rotting corps a former UFC fighter? And what's up with the six-pack?lame

Decent film This is not one of those movies that I would rate as one I would have to watch over and over. That being said I appreciated the myth reinvented and the special effects were pretty good most of the time. Overall for someone familiar with the lore this is at least entertaining. As for the younger crowd, they should probably read a book anyway so they might as well get some idea of the original story. Otherwise it may not make much sense.
