You don't care enough about these people to want to see them come out on top.
Trevor Johnston
It saddles Bateman with a thankless uptight straight-man role while heaping serial slapstick ignominies on his co-star, who gamely bounds through everything the script throws at her.
Bilge Ebiri
Identity Thief is funny enough, but it needed to be darker, raunchier, and crazier to live up to the promise of its casting.
Tom Charity
Even with all its shortcomings and sentimental fudges, there is something about McCarthy's refusal to lie down and play the victim that gives it a comic edge. A blunt edge, to be sure, but an edge all the same.
Linda Barnard
[A] sloppily made exercise of rip-offs and redemption.
Andrew O'Hehir
Considering that it starts out with two distinctive and likable stars and a reasonably promising premise, "Identity Thief" reaches impressive heights of laziness and idiocy.

IT WAS AWESOME If you think this movie sucks then u have no heart its an awesome movie & I wish that you people could have some taste your not the people acting so dont make fun of them If you think they can not act then so be it but dont put some rude comment online saying those people from "identety theift" sucked.

Rent it....but don't buy it. I was so hoping that this movie was funny. Yes, there are some funny parts to it, but I was expecting so much more from Melissa McCarthy. The funny bits to me only took up about 15 minutes of the movie, so the other hour and 45 minutes were setup and totally underused. I was almost embarrassed for Melissa McCarthy during the movie. Jason Bateman was Jason Bateman. His character hardly ever wavers between movies. He wasn't bad but his character really wasn't developed very well. Robert Patrick belittled himself playing the skip tracer. He's a much better actor than Seth Gordon allowed him to be. I'm sure he was trying to be comedic (how else do you explain it) but he just came off as pathetic. I got very bored by the long stretches between emotions in this movie. The ending was predictable and a relief to finally get to. In fact, there wasn't much that jumped out at me during the movie. If you're a Melissa McCarthy fan, then you should see this, but if you're not.... don't waste your money.

Eh... Another Subpar Movie in the Vein of Planes, Trains and Automobiles I have nothing against either of the actors (I actually like Jason Bateman a lot), but this movie did nothing for me. I didn't hate it, but it consisted mainly of rather unfunny, childish humor. Childish humor can be funny (Harold and Kumar, Tommy Boy, Billy Madison), but I felt that the vast majority of the jokes fell flat. I LOVED Planes, Trains and Automobiles... Please, please watch that movie instead. I feel this movie just falls into a long line of bland movies about opposites on a long road trip.

Great movie!! Funniset movie I've seen in a loooong time! The beginning was a bit boring, but who gives a crap! This is my personal favorite movie! And all u people criticizing the movie, all I have to say to you is, well, you're entitled to your own opinion! :/ I honestly can't believe how rude some of u are though. No offense!

More depressing than funny. Identity Theft has an all-star cast with Bateman and McCarthy leading the way. The movie starts out pretty funny, but then goes down the road where you start to feel bad for McCarthy's character and it never gets off that road. Had it's moments but overall still more of a drama.
Absolutely horrible and stupid I like Bateman but this movie is extremely and unnecessarily vulgar, has no heart, is hardly funny despite the trailers, and the characters act illogically (Big spoiler alert: the guy goes cross country in a half-baked effort to clear his name but it's persuaded top steal thousands from his ex-boss and actually gets caught yet the law apparently never catches up with him).

Jason Bateman makes his feature directorial debut with the subversive comedy, Bad Words. Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame. As a reporter (Kathryn Hahn) attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand), who is completely unfazed by Guy's take-no-prisoners approach to life. Critics rave, Bad Words is "the funniest, smartest, most entertaining comedy in a long time!" (Pete Hammond, Movieline)
