Anthony Lane
There is a dogged leanness to Reacher's pursuit that lifts his adventures from the generic rut ...
Kathleen Murphy
If Cruise's fantasy superhero garners as many staunch fans ... we may be witnessing the birth of a new franchise.
David Edelstein
Jack Reacher already feels as if it belongs to another era.
James Berardinelli
A clumsily condensed mystery/thriller novel made into a movie that offers little more than every other clumsily condensed mystery/thriller novel made into a movie.
Moira MacDonald
A workmanlike action thriller, competent but never particularly thrilling.
Dan Kois
Jack Reacher is an absurdly self-confident, sociopathically laser-focused detective-bot. That is to say, he's a hero that only Tom Cruise could love.

The dialogue is often unintentionally funny and Cruise's performance is all wrong.

Tom Cruise is is an army investigator who's been around and can't be found. He suddenly arrears to solve a case that appears to be closed and shut for an attractive defense attorney. What else could be expected, after all Tom Cruise is Jack Reacher. The movie proved to be a topical for crime investigation and kept it interesting. All the clues are given to the audience so see if you can't solve it before Reacher does. I hate it when important facts are with held till the end. More importantly it was not completely obvious exactly how things would turn out. Two thumbs up.

Good action movie If you're looking for realism and realistic events go watch the History channel. This is a pure action movie with some elements of suspense decent story and pretty good violent sequences. The movie does not pretend to be anything its not and Tom Cruise is very believable. Not boring at all.

Good adventure, but not great. This movie kept me entertained and isn't completely predictable. Tom Cruise is very good and other lead actors pull it together well. The motivation behind the bad guys was a bit unclear to me after watching it once so it was hard to understand why it was all happening. But in a movie like this it almost doesn't matter why... It's just eye candy.

Disappointing A Mystery/Thriller that lacks both mystery and thrills. There's nothing keeping you watching; I had to watch the movie over two nights, it became so boring. The plot really goes nowhere. It takes them two hours to discern something the audience knew from the first scene: the whole thing was a setup. That isn't a spoiler. First scene of the movie, we're shown one person committing a crime, and another getting blamed. All that's left is two hours of canned and unnatural dialog, with 0 character development.

A throwback to the 80's action movies like Lethal Weapo Clear and evil bad guy? Check. Smart, good looking action hero? Check. This is a very competent action movie that is just smart enough to keep you entertained for a couple of hours. There is nothing especially compelling or fun about the Jack Reacher character to spawn a series like the studio was hoping but Tom Cruise does well with the role he's been basically playing for 15 years. Some interesting set pieces and dialogue as well. A good time-waster and not much more than that. Better than most recent action movies... but that's not saying much.
Worst movie he's ever made! A combo of the worst acting, writing, plot-line, action/ effects, and props I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing! The end is Cruise running through a construction site in a classic torrential downpour, with a shoddy plastic G36 carbine that he's holding like a pistol with arm extended. No recoil when he shoots the 32 bad guys in a row, as they're a unloading AK's and the ricochet sound effects are right out of 1930's western! I was left wondering if they made it that bad on purpose... ? I puked...
Captivating intense movie, does NOT have to fit the book descriptions 100% to be a great movie! Great movie, captivating thrilling story from start to finish. Bad guys were super bad, which gives the movie that extra edge. Tom cruise was intense, as he normally is for his roles. Who cares "if he doesn't fit the 6'5 height character from the book". For all you book readers, see the movie then judge it, not the other way round.

This film IS worth watching I went in to owning this film, as I could not rent it, and I'm glad I bought the HD version, as I'd watch it again as it's pure action with a who-done-it type of feel, that you don't see it coming until you're at the very end. I've noticed that TC seems to end up playing a character that their first name is JACK... but don't let that stop you from seeing this film. TC's performance isn't cocky like you would expect, in fact I was surprised how well he did this role. This isn't the Mission Impossible dribble you would expect, but a well thought out, well performed film. I won't give it any spoilers, but I can see a part two, three, or even four, the way the film lends it self, that the end is nowhere in sight. I'd see another story in the long line, if they wrote it. In the end, Jack Reacher, a would be superhero that plays by what's right, not by the rules... I would go as far, as to say that Jack Reacher is a modern day Dirty Harry Meets Sherlock Holmes. If you're questioning if you should see it or not, I would highly suggest the HD version, for only a few bucks more.. it's something you'll find yourself watching a few times at least.

The Dwarf King casts himself in Jack Reacher's role? I think NOT! This is one of those movies that polarizes a movie-going public. Hate/Love. I am in the former camp as one who actually READS Lee Childs' books and have loved them from "Killing Room", Jack Reacher's first. That brings up the BIIIIIIG problem: Tom Cruise (Dwarf King) is NOT Jack Reacher and no matter how the script adapts to Cruise's diminutive size to play Reacher who is 6'5" and around 250 lbs., he will NEVER pull that off. Reacher's size is way too much a part of the story lines and his character. For example, every confrontation that comes up is part and parcel of the outcome and the thinking process as Jack rehearses the blows in his mind. Also, he walks everywhere and is never picked up due to his size and scruffy appearance. Cruise bought the film rights of Reacher; at least in one script. So he gets to PLAY Reacher, which is BEYONDARROGANCE on his part. Practically anyone who has read Reacher novels is REPULSED by this HORRIBLE miscasting! The books are terrific but I doubt I'll ever read another as Cruise has ruined them for me....can't get over the thought of the midget playing a GIANT. DON'T confuse a good script for a good movie! Yechh!!!!

Bad acting or writing? I don't know if it was bad acting or writing but I found this movie to be kind of irritating. I wanted to like it and it had potential but just kept falling short with bad lines and timing. I like action movies and there are times great action can override bad acting but this was not one of them for me. Only reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1 was the Chevelle SS.

Minus & Plus Cruise is the wrong person if you are already a Reacher fan, which I am. He just cannot fit or fill the bill. If you just want to enjoy an action movie, and do not already know the Reacher character or can put him aside, Cruise does an OK, even good job. My rating is an attempt to use the "put him aside" method.
