A mess.
Christopher Orr
The most indelible performance in the film is not, strictly speaking, a performance at all. Rather it is Woola, a six-legged Martian hound who rather resembles a cross between a bulldog and a fetal...
Peter Rainer
The reported $250 million price tag for John Carter gives one pause. I suppose one could argue that masterpieces have no price. Then again, John Carter is no masterpiece.
Laremy Legel
Where John Carter continually gets it right is pacing, levity, and breadth of story.
Stephen Whitty
Whenever the fighting stops and two people have to stand and talk, all the air goes out of everything. Suddenly it feels as if we're in an empty theater, watching a dusty old sword-and-sandal epic.

Disney Can Do Better...Maybe.. Maybe if they had someone like Johnny Depp in this, it could rise above being SO boring! And get real, why complain about marketing? It just sucks, just like Disneys Mars Needs Moms and the Black Hole, If they are going to make a kids movie, then they need to go for the jokes, singing, dancing, etc, if they want an adult movie then throw some real science in there and real dialogue, because this is just plain bad, no matter how you see at...Hopefully they won't ruin Star Wars more than it already has been!
Worst movie I've seen all year! The touching moments weren't retouching, the cool moments weren't cool, and both of the main actors' faces were annoying. Thestory seemed like a bunch of sci-fi dudes each had their own idea of what an alien planet would be like and they finally decided to just put all the ideas together and try to come up with a story that would work for all of them. In the end, the story didn't work at all.
Great Movie. Bad Marketing This movie was so awesome. The story and effects were great as was the acting. I admit the latter was a surprise. The movie isn't an exact match for the series, but it works very well. The people want more & won't get it due to bad theatre sales-- due to bad marketing! There are at least 10 things that could've been done to make me see this in theatres. As an avid sci-fi & fantasy fan, I'm not a hard sell. There are many like me who didn't know how awesome the story was until researching on their own.
Great Adventure Story I had never heard of John Carter until its previews in the theater. I really enjoyed this movie and may even consider purchasing it (which I don't do often). At times it got a bit cliche but every once in a while cliche is nice. Visual effects were pretty good and to be honest, I was surprised this came from Disney.
Pleasant Surprise! This movie did horribly at the box office and was ripped by the critics, so when I finally watched it, I was pleasantly surprise. I've invited more people to watch it and I've enjoyed it more each time. Once again I'm reminded not to trust the critics! This was well-rounded with sci-fi action, romance & comedy and a touch of National Treasure in it. Very enjoyable.
Junk, Horrible, Stilted lines, horrible timing, cheap special effects, this one has it all. One of the executives at Disney was forced to resign this is so bad. Sorry I rented it. Do yourself a favor and rent "Swamp Creatures from the Bayou." You will enjoy it more.
A great flick I dont understand the outcry on this movie. i enjoyed the whole thing. critics dont know crap and ruined what this movie could have done. well worth the buy.

Loved it I understand the criticism that John Carter received, but I felt it was a very fitting adaptation of the book. It is a pulp movie, it is supposed to be non stop action and romance. Is it deep and life changing? Absolutely not, but it was never intended to be. This movie was a great experience that I will take over the last four Star Wars released or Avatar any day.
Not sure why all the Hollywood gripe. I just watched this and thought it was really good even though I read it was a flop? Thought the ending was good and the overall story was great. Kept me interested the entire movie. I felt for the characters, especially when JC had to get back to her. Was it LOTR good? No, but it was wayyyyy better than I read about.
Really? About 30 minutes into this movie I asked my wife if she also felt this was the stupidest movie she had ever seen? At 50 minutes, I asked again. At about 1 hour, I just got up and left because my brain was struggling to keep me alive. Terrible dialogue, bad acting, stupid plot, ridiculous love story. Nobody should ever have to sit through such a horrible horrible movie. Ranks right up there with Spaced Invaders and PCU.
A terrible waste of time This movie has one good part: The credits rolling at the end; signifying your permission to be relieved from the torture that is John Carter. The acting is terrible, the story is barely connected, and the movie would have been twice as good (2 starts lol) if you cut approximately 45 minutes from it.
Authentic Sci Fi John Carter, the movie - that is, took the time to present a few items pretty much as one might have seen them in the latter half of the 19th century. Carter's leaping ability on Mars being the most obvious. The stories, as originally written, used simple math to imagine what the gravity would be like to an Earthling on Mars. Of course, most people overlook that because most have never read the original story of John Carter of Mars. Visually stunning, this is a steam-punk dream come true. The scripting did what it could to trace the original story to make it understandable to the somewhat limited minds of the 21st century. My only comment that would come in negative is in the marketing of this great movie; it failed Rice Burroughs by altering the title for fear of mentioning that name of 'Mars' in the that title. 5 stars is an honest opinion from my standpoint. This flick is well worth watching for those who enjoy honest sci-fi in an age when that honesty is almost an anachronism... now having been replaced by fantasy. Enjoy :)

Critics Missed the Point This movie probably blindsided reviewers who weren't looking for depth in the first place. After all, this is an action/adventure movie based on a story by one of the most prolific pulp speculative fiction writers ever. If you actually pay attention and give the director the benefit of the doubt for a few minutes in this film, however, you soon find out that for all the indicators pointing to a kid-friendly CGI-fest, there's something more going on here. On the surface, you've got some truly funny visual humor going on, especially with Woola and the Green Martians, and a costume design and visual presentation of a fantasy that is genius in its consistency and message. There's also a well-wrought message for the kids about how cultural differences truly are different, but the Other is something to be treasured and not abhorred. Beneath that, at the film's thematic core, Andrew Stanton is continuing to explore his theme of sustainability - something he did overtly in WALL-E. Barsoom is a dying planet suffering climate change as it loses its atmosphere. There are those looking to profit from this - and scientists trying to reverse it. In this, it transcends its pulp origin.
Fantastic Movie I saw this movie in theaters, and it was actually an excellent movie. However, I'm convinced that the horrible horrible marketing job they did for this movie was its downfall. I didn't even want to see it, but my friend really wanted to go, so I went along. It's a shame, I wish there would be a sequel. A perfect example of simple bad publicity butchering a great movie. This was amazing in IMAX.
AMAZING! The years spent making this film are worth every minute! The unincumbered method of revealing exposition was refreshing and gave the story a heartbeat. Despite that the sprawling history of Barsum had to be condensed for film, Stanton and his talented team made this fantastical treat for the eyes compelling as well as entertaining. Those critics who have given J.C.M. less than 4 stars cannot say they understand or appreciate the Sci-fi genre. Their opinions are best ignored. I say, "Bravo!".
Boring The movie seemed good if you are under 13, or you have little kids. Basically it is a very corny movie with extremely bad acting, and the storyline is very predictable. Just another Disney film for kids. The action is short and crapy. Only a few people are killed in the film and when they die they bleed blue ish black ish blood. Like I said good kids film, but boring and corny for adults, or older teen. If you are hopeing to watch a sci fi movie like Avitar you will be very upset.
Amazing film! The critics are ignorant fools! Gets a little old seeing films of this calibre get slaughtered due to ignorance and stupidity on behalf of the reviewers. This would have been a great series if the numbers had been better at the box office!
