Two in the Wave
Directors Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut changed the face of cinema forever as members of the French New Wave. They also happened to be best friends. TWO IN THE WAVE documents their intensely combative and creative relationship during their time at Cahiers du Cinéma, their triumphant work on The 400 Blows and Breathless, and their dramatic falling out following the worker and student strikes of May 1968. It also presents the unique bond both filmmakers shared with the actor Jean-Pierre Leaud, who started his career as a child and grew up with Godard and Truffaut as brilliantly bickering father figures. Written and narrated by former Cahiers editor Antoine de Baecque, it is a meticulously researched examination of this vibrant and turbulent period in film history. With clips from over 30 films, and rare interviews with Godard and Truffaut throughout their careers, TWO IN THE WAVE is an essential and often revelatory look at the life and work of two of cinema's inimitable masters.
The Last of the Unjust
Three decades after his cinematic milestone, Shoah, Claude Lanzmann once again reorients our understanding of the Holocaust. The Last of the Unjust centers on Benjamin Murmelstein, the last Jewish elder of Theresienstadt (the so-called "model" ghetto), a figure despised by many of the ghetto's surviving inhabitants. Intercut with footage of Lanzmann himself revisiting specific sites in Vienna and the Czech Republic, the brilliant Murmelstein—sometimes excitedly but more often calmly—explains his actions and precisely defines his paradoxical role in history.
About Water
In About Water, documentary filmmaker Udo Maurer takes us to the outskirts of human civilization and the stories of the dealings with the "wet element". From inundated Bangladesh, where houses turn into boats, to the steppe of Kazakhstan, where fishing villages lie in the middle of the desert, and finally to the densely populated slums of Nairobi, where drinking water becomes a matter of life and death. (Original Title: Über Wasser)
Out Of Time
In Europe, small, traditional, Mom & Pop shops are vanishing at an alarming rate. The attitude 'cheaper is better' is becoming the rule and "big" often outshines or absorbs the "small" and local. OUT OF TIME is a documentary about four of the dying breed of small local shops: a butcher's, a drug store, leatherware shop and button shops. By the end of the film only one of these shops will have survived. Silently observed by the camera, the film unfolds as a portrayal of memories, relationships, working conditions, love, loneliness and the passing of time. (Harald Friedl) (Original Title: Aus Der Zeit)
The Kid With A Bike
When Cyril's father (Jérémie Renier) abandons him, he obsessively searches for his bicycle - placing his last bit of hope in this symbol of their relationship. Almost by accident, he becomes the ward of a kind hairdresser (Cécile de France - Clint Eastwood's HEREAFTER), who seems surprised to find herself so determined to help him. With his wild, unpredictable behavior and his disastrous search for father figures, Cyril risks losing her - though she refuses to give up without a fight.
Man From London
Nominated for a Golden Palm at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for director, Bela Tarr. After witnessing a murder, an innocent man stumbles upon a suitcase full of cash. Will he escape his dreary life and take the money, or go to the police? This indie thriller is an IFC Films release and features Academy Award(R) winner, Tilda Swinton.
Inspector Bellamy
Two of the giants of French cinema, Claude Chabrol and Gerard Depardieu, team up for the only time for the director's 50th and final feature film, a wry thriller about a police commissioner trying to balance professional instinct with family duty. Once again, Paul Bellamy (Depardieu) and his wife are spending their vacation at her family home in a quiet town. But just as they're settling into their reassuringly predictable holiday routine, his perennially troubled younger brother shows up, joined by a mysterious stranger seeking Bellamy's protection.
Father of my Children
Grégoire Canvel has everything a man could want. A wife he loves, three delightful children and a stimulating job. He's a film producer. Discovering talented filmmakers and developing films that fit his conception of the cinema—free and true to life—is precisely his reason for living. His vocation. It fulfills him and Grégoire devotes almost all his time and energy to his work. He's hyperactive, he never stops. Except on weekends, which he spends in the country with his family—gentle interludes, as precious as they are fragile. With his bearing and exceptional charisma, Grégoire commands admiration. He seems invincible. Yet his prestigious production company, Moon Films, is on its last legs. Too many productions, too many risks, too many debts. Storm clouds are gathering. But Grégoire plows on at all costs. Where will his blind obstinacy lead him? One day, he is obliged to face the facts. In one word: failure. He is overwhelmed by fatigue. Which soon, secretly, turns into despair.
Ricky
From celebrated French director Francois Ozon (UNDER THE SAND, 8 WOMEN) comes RICKY, a hilarious genre-hybrid film about family. When Katie, an ordinary woman, meets Paco, an ordinary man, something magical and miraculous happens: they fall in love. Out of their love comes an extraordinary baby: Ricky.
The Secret of the Grain
The Secret of the Grain is a touching and resoundingly humanistic story set in the rustic port of Sete in southeastern France. Slimane has worked in the same shipyard job for over 35 years, when his growing dissatisfaction prompts him to try to open his own restaurant. His dream seems unbelievable, but his contagious conviction and persistence work their way into the hearts of his loyal but dispersed family; the four children from his first marriage, his ex-wife, current girlfriend and her bright, outspoken daughter, Rym (played to great acclaim by the stunning newcomer Hafsia Herzi). A grand film about ordinary people, The Secret of the Grain is a deliciously slow-burning indie drama about fate, food and family.
Monsieur Lazhar
Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, MONSIEUR LAZHAR tells the poignant story of a Montreal middle school class shaken by the death of their well-liked teacher. Bachir Lazhar (Fellag), a 55-year-old Algerian immigrant, offers the school his services as a substitute teacher and is quickly hired. As he helps the children heal, he also learns to accept his own painful past. This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors.
