Moira MacDonald
The film is a compelling tribute to a remarkable achievement, and to a young woman who is, in her own words, "pretty bad-ass."
Ben Sachs
At best this functions as a pleasant aquatic travelogue; at worst it validates a teenage girl's egotism.
Chris Nashawaty
Maidentrip is full of sunsets and dolphins but short on introspection and drama.
Jeannette Catsoulis
Before our eyes, Laura's lengthening limbs and deepening introspection become the point of a movie that begins with a child and ends with a young woman.
Sara Stewart
What the film lacks in plot twists it makes up for in sheer amazement, such as one scene in which Dekker, in green night-vision, sways to Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" while closing in on the equator in her 40-foot vessel, Guppy.
David Ehrlich
Imagine if All is Lost were a great documentary starring Jennifer Lawrence.

"Maidenstrip" is a clear-eyed chronicle of Dekker's record-breaking voyage. Think "All Is Lost," but real, and with a teenage girl instead of Robert Redford (plus a very different ending).

The House I Live In
40 years, 45 million arrests, $1 Trillion -- America's longest, most tragic and costliest war is the so-called War on Drugs. Are drug laws fair? Should a drug sentence be a life sentence? The House I Live In examines the case from the perspective of the dealers, the jailers, the grieving mothers and journalists like David Simon (creator, The Wire). A FilmBuff Presentation. MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Senna
The story of the monumental life and tragic death of legendary Brazilian motor-racing Champion, Ayrton Senna. Spanning the decade from his arrival in Formula One in the mid 80's, the film follows Senna's struggles both on track against his nemesis, French World Champion Alain Prost, and off it, against the politics which infest the sport. Sublime, spiritual yet, on occasion, ruthless - Senna conquers and transcends Formula One to become a global superstar. Privately, he is humble, almost shy, and fiercely patriotic, donating millions to his native Brasil and contemplating a life beyond motor-racing. Yet he is struck down in his prime on the blackest weekend in the history of the sport, watched live on television by 300 million people. Years on he is revered in Formula One as the greatest motor racing driver of all time - and in Brasil as a Saint. MPAA Rating: PG-13 Strong language and disturbing images
Brooklyn Castle
Imagine a school where the cool kids are the chess team! Welcome to I.S. 318. This irresistibly uplifting doc tells the stories of five members of the chess team at an inner city junior high school that has won more national championships than any other in the country. The film follows the challenges these kids face in their personal lives as well as on the chessboard, and is as much about the sting of their losses as it is about the anticipation of their victories. These are kids that you will not soon forget. A FilmBuff Presentation. MPAA Rating: PG
Sexy Baby
Sexy Baby is the first documentary film to put faces to a seismic cultural shift: the cyber age is creating a new sexual landscape. While doing research for the film, we had intimate and candid conversations with kids in middle school classrooms, suburban shopping malls, nightclubs, college dorms, and even conducted an informal roundtable during a high school house party. While chronicling trends among small town and big city kids, we discovered this: Having pubic hair is considered unattractive and "gross." Most youngsters know someone who has emailed or texted a naked photo of themselves. Many kids have accidentally or intentionally had their first introduction to sex be via hardcore online porn. Facebook has created an arena where kids compete to be "liked" and constantly worry about what image to portray -- much of what was once private is now made public. And the list goes on. A FilmBuff Presentation. MPAA Rating: NOT RATED
Artifact
Telling harsh truths about the modern music business, this riveting and award-winning documentary gives intimate access to singer/actor Jared Leto ("Requiem for a Dream," "Dallas Buyers Club") and his band Thirty Seconds to Mars as they fight a relentless lawsuit with record label Virgin/EMI and write songs for their album "This Is War." Opening up his life for the camera during months of excruciating pressures, Leto reveals the struggles his band must face over questions of art, money and integrity. A FilmBuff Presentation.
Forks Over Knives
What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.
Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country's three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to "battle" these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.
Could it be there's a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive but so utterly straightforward, that it's mind-boggling that more of us haven't taken it seriously?
FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called "diseases of affluence" that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.
How to Survive a Plague
Oscar nominated for Best Documentary! "How To Survive A Plague" is the untold story of the efforts that turned AIDS into a mostly manageable condition -- and the improbable group of young men and women who, with no scientific training, infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, and helped identify promising new compounds, moving them through trials and into drugstores in record time. These drugs saved their lives and ended the darkest days of the epidemic, while virtually emptying AIDS wards in American hospitals.
Off The Rez
"Off the Rez" follows Shoni Schimmel, a high-school junior living on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon and the star basketball player on the local team. When Shoni's mother, Ceci Moses, goes against the wishes of her community and takes a job coaching a high-school team in Portland, the course of Shoni and her family's lives are changed forever. This compelling documentary chronicles Shoni's senior year and reveals the struggle that mother and daughter face to keep their hoop dreams alive and prove that Native American women can become champions off the Rez.ᅠA FilmBuff Presentation.
Inglourious Basterds
In the first year of the German occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish American soldiers to perform swift, shocking acts of retribution. Later known to their enemy as "the basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquis, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.... Employing pulp and propaganda in equal measure, Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS weaves together infamous, oppressed, real and larger-than-life the stories of WWII.
Blackfish
Killer whales are beloved, majestic, friendly giants, yet infamous for their capacity to kill viciously. Blackfish unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of the notorious performing whale Tilikum, who — unlike any orca in the wild — has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. Blackfish expands on the discussion of keeping such intelligent creatures in captivity.
Trollhunter
The government says there's nothing to worry about -- it's just a problem with bears making trouble in the mountains and forests of Norway. But local hunters don't believe it -- and neither do a trio of college students who want to find out the truth. Armed with a video camera, they trail a mysterious "poacher," who wants nothing to do with them. However, their persistence lands them straight in the path of the objects of his pursuits: trolls. They soon find themselves documenting every move of this grizzled, unlikely hero -- the trollhunter -- risking their lives to uncover the secrets of creatures only thought to exist in fairy tales.
