The problem is that [the] movie barely meets the minimum generic requirements, and thus comes off as pretentious for presuming to hover so airily above them.
Wesley Morris
[The movie] has more integrity than its creepshow peers. The story basically comes down to a dead-looking woman who doesn't want to be a mother fighting for parental custody against a long-dead woman who does. (Grad students, start your theses.)
Nigel Floyd
By splitting the action between several different characters and locations, the plot dissipates the suspense and lacks focus, as if it has been bolted together from disparate, ill-fitting pieces.
Drew Hunt
Screenplay contrivances aside, it's as stylish and atmospheric as modern horror gets.
Dana Stevens
Even if the beats are familiar, Muschietti sustains a remarkable mood throughout: wintry, elemental and stark, like a late Sylvia Plath poem.
David Edelstein
I was guessing right till the bitter, scary, transcendent end.

It starts out strongly, using evocative visuals and an unsettling backstory to establish a creepy tableau, but it proves unable to sustain those strengths all the way to the finish line.

Makes no sense to me Why would someone rate a movie FIVE stars, then say it was merely "nice" or "okay"?? This actually affects the numerical total and averages. I just do not understand the logic behind these ratings (assuming any logic was even applied). Oh...movie was not as scary and/or thrilling as advertised. It was only "okay" so I only gave it two stars. Thanks for the use of the soap box.
Pretty good...not earth shatteringly great...but good watched it because of all the reviews... pretty mixed. I didn't find it all that scary but visually I thought it was eerie. I do agree with the one reviewer who questioned phone service in the middle of the woods. I would really like to know who the provider was.
Story good, ghost costume-not so much Beautifully directed. Original storyline. Disappointed w/the ghost..more ugly than scary, making her kind of silly, ruining it for me. The children were well casted/acted, beautiful and memorable. Wish I rented it instead of purchasing it.

This is my favorite scary movie I have been reading the reviews and i disagree. I think this movie is wonderful! Its a good movie to watch on a stormy night with a bunch of friends. I would know because im a regular 12 year old girl that loves scary movies. I know most people think its not very thrilling or entertaning, but i think its wonderful. And now i feel stupid because i tryed to sound smart. Heh heh
sceay movie!!!!! if you love sceary movies, this the movie for you, I watched it and its emotional but not much, and I didnt understand who the ghost spirit thing was til the end. i know the title may give it away but its not thier mother. Dad gets what he deserves. But very sad ending :"( baby girl. Its a MUST SEE movie. But also good for a movie night, I loved the move its a really intersting movie, pay very good attention to EVERYTHING ok, and ENJOY the movie.

Pretty good horror/thriller flick The movie as a whole is highly entertaining and the creature design is unbelievable once you realize that it is an actor and not all CGI. End will leave some dissatisfied, however, as it is quite predictable long before you get to it. Still worth at least a rental for something that is different from the usual Hollywood remakes and sequels that have been churning out these days.

Revitalizing Revitalizing the horror genre! Loved that it brought back relatable characters, good acting, perfect using of setting and lighting. This movie actually gets spooks out of you not by just scary music but actual plotting and suspense. Only downside is the confusing plot line. Had to explain backstory to a few friends! Other than that it is a fantastic movie!

Good Movie There's no such thing as a horror movie anymore, just a bunch of senseless killing and nonsense with some s****y plots and story line......but for this one, I will make an exception, it's the closet thing to a true horror movie I've seen in a while, the atmosphere from start to end is nice, suitable for a horror film, sound is good....the suspense comes and goes a little, not a problem for me, keeps it interesting, no part of the movie was boring for me. In a nutshell, it's a true horror movie or at least the closest thing to a true horror movie I've seen in a while.
Save Your Money Good premise and special effects, but not much else worth seeing here. Two-dimensional characters doing irrational things in an absurdly fast-paced storyline makes for a mediocre movie at best...tack on a stupid, sappy ending to drop the whole experience below average, and you have "Mama".

Best horror film I've seen in a while This is the first horror film that literally kept me on edge of my seat, and downright terrified, for extended sequences. The camera angle placement... Perfect, you see exactly what you need to see. The actors, especially the children, exude exactly the right amount of emotion - and creepy - that they need too. Any movie can combine a popping up monster with a loud noise to be scary, but this one manages to be downright terrifying. It's no cinematic masterpiece, but in horror it doesn't get any better.
Excellent Movie, Plot, Acting, -A Must See! Not sure why this is "Labeled" as a "Drama"- This Movie was much more entertaining, on the tracks of Thriller/Horror. I jumped a few times.....this was not that ordinary, just something to watch Movie....Great Plot!..Much better than expected. Overall Excellent Movie! The little girls are absolutely wonderful....

One of the best of the Generation! Mama, definitely gave me goosebumps since it leaves you terrified to know what may be lurking around the corner of the household of which the movie mainly took place. Mama, will most likely leave you shaking in fear after the end credits. Definitely Rent or Buy this movie.
