"Melancholia" is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on depression that is as likely to exasperate as many people as it moves.

Melancholia floats in an air of supernatural malaise and tension, a melancholy mirrored in everything and everyone.

Melancholia will haunt you for days, maybe weeks.
Chris Vognar
A severe and ecstatic work of art.

No moviemaker I know creates psychodramas so hard to watch and difficult to forget. If we esteem Sylvia Plath, Vincent van Gogh and Samuel Beckett, Von Trier deserves our attention, too.
Joe Williams

Extraordinary. As an art lover I must compliment everyone that created this film. The opening is a beautiful surreal scene, until it is overwhelmed by an even more surreal reality at the end of the movie. Acting was first class, but it was the art direction that really shone. I must buy this film.
SUPERB (10 Stars!) I consider myself an avid film viewer. I'm very drawn to the arts. I was absolutely enthralled with this film. Kirsten Dunst should be nominated (and win) for best actress in a drama for the upcoming Academy Awards. According to Dunst, this is a "poetic" film. I agree. While some may find this film not to their liking, others shall appreciate the unique filming & silent moments (which allow the viewer to engage their creative inferences). One of the best films and acting I have had the privilege of seeing.

A long, boring slog through nothing new I assumed that I would enjoy this film. I have certainly enjoyed dark artistic films int he past. While Melancholia seems press all the right buttons, this artsy drama ends up going nowhere. Your mileage may vary, but for me there was nothing about the visuals that were particularly new or striking. I'd also been hoping that there would be more to it story-wise. As it is the movie drags it's interesting premise out farther than it can stretch without ever giving you true food for thought. Just because a movie isn't forgettable Hollywood trash doesn't make it good.
WHAT A SOMBER MIND TRIP!!! OK, this is definitely the best Lars von Trier film I'm aware of. (He does so torture his female leads though!) Anyway, if you want a happy fluffy pretty film, don't choose one titled "Melancholia" first of all. The title is in no way misleading, it is entirely appropriate. Melancholia is an affected and introspective work of art. It is engaging and aloof, beautiful and tragic.
One bad movie I love photo and cinema art but this was an unwatchable movie with few good artistic scenes. Out side of the few well shot scenes; it was like watching a 2 hour long JC Penny ad. Very slow moving, poor/no plot development and completely forgettable characters wearing what looked like JC Pennny's spring collection. It was like the director was playing a joke to see how bad of a movie he could make and still have people say it was amazing because of the photography.
Intriguing promise but terrible movie I had high hopes for this movie -- it deals with themes of death, the meaning of life, family relations, and astronomy along with beautiful cinematography. However, it turned out to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The first half of the movie deals with a disastrous wedding -- imagine a comedy about the things that can go wrong with a wedding but without comedy. It is just very unpleasant to watch but without any emotional payoff. The second half seems to be an attempt at a metaphor regarding mental illness. Slowness does not necessarily equal introspection, superficial beauty does not lead sustained interest. I almost never take the time to write movie reviews but in this case the movie was so bad that I hope to save someone else 135 minutes of their time.
Brilliant. Stunning. Magnificent. This took my breath away. Some scenes are so beautifully shot that you would think you were looking at a painting, while the best shots in the movie are pure cinematic poetry. References to Tarkovsky are not unfounded, from featuring Bruegel's "The Hunters in The Snow" to its sheer cinematic beauty. Charlotte Gainsbourg is at the top of her already peak game in this, and Von Trier, who is known for putting his female leads to the test, has found the perfect balance between the schadenfreude we've come to expect from him and getting emotional and rigorous performances from his actors. I don't usually write reviews but there was one that was so plain unsettling that referenced "the Family Guy Wierd Face Hot Body competition" that made me laugh like I do at my drunk uncle, and I felt a call to action. You will not be disappointed, unless you are looking forward to Family Guy or my drunk uncle.
As the name suggests, a mellow cool sci fi movie And seeing the gorgeous Kirsten Dunst naked adds to the fun, this is a sci fi drama about a strange planet near earth seen from two very different sisters point of view. Very cool and mellow.

Good not great. This was a good enough movie to continue watching to the end but only with a couple of pauses in between. The wedding and dysfunctional family scenes were certainly drawn out to the point where I had to pause the film, step away and take a break. There were to many scenes which disrupted the flow. Also, I realize this is not a Nova documentary but a rouge planet passing close to Earth would cause devastating gravitational and tidal forces long before it crashed into us.
Not my kind of movie. While I will agree this movie is shot beautifully, I will not be watching it ever again. All but the last 5-10 minutes are very boring, just leading up to the inevitable end. the opening 'sequence' made me think the entire movie was going to be in slow-motion. Thank god that wasn't the case, but then, maybe I could find a way to appreciate it more if it had been. Oh and unnecessary nudity can not be appreciated by me, unless you're talking about statues and paintings. Not some movie... Don't get me wrong, I love art. But I guess this form of art is lost on me.
Garbage!!! Don't bother. You'll never get back the 2 hours of your life you waste watching the garbage film. NO PLOT, Slow Moving, Does not flow, Doesn't make sense at all more than half the time. Wish I could get back those 2 hours I wasted on this film and do something constructive!!!
Artistic crap This movie was an incoherant and overly long movie. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen when the credits rolled...
Pretentious Pretentious and boring...I developed melancholia from watching it...lol
Hmmm... By far one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen. I'm convinced the man who came up with the whole concept is insane however I very much enjoyed it, had me thinking the whole way through. You have to get by the first 10 min without falling asleep, and the planet they speak of doesn't play a part until the end which had me guessing if the movie was actually about its description or not, but by the end it all fell together sota speak. My opinion, worth the money.
Beautiful and twisted Like Antichrist, this has haunted me since I saw it. It's like Bergman with a malevolent rather than silent God.
Worse movie ever. Sad and depressing Worse movie ever. Sad and depressing
Stunningly beautiful Cinematically, brilliant. One of the single most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Well acted. A must see.
Amazing It is not a movie for the main stream. If you are into fast pace; a plot that requires no thinking on the part of the viewer; and predictablability, then it is not for you. The movie is not meant to be uplifting - rather it is an existentialist take on the meaning of angst in lives that are filled with melancholy.
Watched in the theater and walked out This movie was completely lacking of a plot or point. The hand held camera work was nauseating. The acting was poor and without character development. The scenes are better suited to be on separate monitors in an art gallery rather than a continuous dizzying stream. I was hoping for a dramatic movie with some science-fiction added to it, but ended up with neither.

The Reader

Directed by three-time Academy Awards' nominee Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and featuring Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) as the grown man still reeling from Hanna's influence, The Reader is a "moving, romantic and poignant story, (Roger Friedman, Fox News) about the difficult distance between truth and reconciliation
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
In Werner Herzog's new film Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is to scoring drugs while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes) and together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.
