Generation P (Subtitled)
Comedy
4
Victor Ginzburg's film Generation P is, in many ways, built on hallucinations, including Che Guevara's speech on how television destroys man. But this parallel, virtual universe also offers a glimpse of real life in Moscow's meticulously reconstructed Roaring 1990s, where the real plot unfolds. Babylen Tatarsky, having rediscovered himself as an employee of an advertisement agency, is busy concocting marketing campaigns for western brands, adapting them to the "Russian mentality." Packed with special effects and unexpected revelations, the film tells the story of how former Soviet Komsomol Youth turned into advertisers in the service of the Goddess Ishtar, and how the Pepsi Generation chose Coca-Cola.
Though delivered in the rapid-patter style of classic Thirties screwball farce, the mordant and ironic humor of Generation P, adapted from Victor Pelevin's iconic Russian bestseller, has more in common with the metaphysical modernity of Williams Burroughs and Gibson. Set in the ground zero of gangster globalism and driven by a truly manic energy, Generation P is at once a comedy, a tragedy, and a documentary fantasy about the disappearing lines between above and below, government and business, legal and illegal, and reality and digitally manufactured doubles.

Sushenya, an innocent rail worker, is arrested with a band of saboteurs when a train is derailed not far from his village. The German officer decides to set him free rather than hang him with the others, but rumors of Sushenya's treason spread quickly and partisans Burov and Voitik seek revenge. Captured by the partisans, Sushenya is led through the forest where they are ambushed. Soon he finds himself one-on-one with his wounded enemy, forced to make a moral choice under immoral circumstances. From the critically acclaimed director of MY JOY.
Bullet Collector
Drama

A stunning, intense tale of a youth lost in an uncaring world, Bullet Collector is the first film from promising director Alexander Vartanov. A visual, moody masterpiece, this drama follows the traumas of a wide-eyed 14-year-old boy. He has a terrible home life with a step-father who can barely stand the sight of him. His school life is even worse as bullies torment and attack him with shocking regularity. And his life becomes even more torturous after he is sent to hellish reform school. Prone to day-dreaming about a life where he is loved, fights off his attackers and has a beautiful girlfriend, the reality of an entirely different and terrible life continually shocks him back to reality. Is he just a timid kid destined for abuse or will he gain the strength to fight off his attackers? Recalling the world of Antoine Doinel in Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows, this unsettling, visually brilliant drama updates that classic by giving it a nightmarishly Russian spin.

In the 1940s during the aftermath of World War II, Nina, a young Polish woman, is deported with her baby by the Soviet Army to the remote and inhospitable lands of the USSRs eastern region. She has to work in a Sovkhoz labor camp guarded by the Russian military police. When her child becomes ill, she flees and sets out across the barren planes of Siberia, in search of medication for her baby with a group of Kazakh nomads. Critically acclaimed and festival awarded, the film portrays an intimate and personal experience of a woman, forced into exile, struggling against inhuman conditions to save her child at any cost.

The dark corners of growing up as a new immigrant are powerfully explored in this intense documentary. Arriving in Israel from Moldova in the 1990's left Sophia unstable and yearning for more. Night Watch
Set in contemporary Moscow, Night Watch uncovers the other-world battle that upholds a 1000-year-old truce between the forces of Light and the forces of Darkness. For centuries, the undercover members of the Night Watch have policed the world's Dark Ones -- the vampires, witches, shape-shifters and sorcerers that wage treachery in the night -- while the Dark Ones have a Day Watch that in turn polices the forces of Light. The fate of humanity rests in this delicate balance between good and evil but that fate is in jeopardy. From the Director of Wanted.
