Feels ever more grounded and stuck ...

Was Cruise trying to beat out fellow Scientologist John Travolta for the honor of starring in the dumbest sci-fi epic ever?
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky
If nothing else, "Oblivion" will go down in film history as the movie where Tom Cruise pilots a white, sperm-shaped craft into a giant space uterus.
Richard Roeper
This is the sci-fi movie equivalent of a pretty damn good cover band.
Tom Charity
Glossy, derivative, ambitious and fatally underpowered.
J. R. Jones
The story eventually devolves into a grab bag of sci-fi tropes but, as with so many other Cruise productions, the sheer scale of everything is so mind-numbing that you may not notice.

Don't let RottenTomatoes fool you This movie is superb. However, its trailer does not do it justice, because to do it justice visually would be to spoil the plot. However, I believe that by discussing how it deviates from the standard of its genre, I can do it non-spoiler-y justice. If you are looking for a shoot-em-up, action-y sci-fi film, look elsewhere. This may be what turns many of its detractors against Oblivion. The film is, instead, a superb _post-apocalyptic_ sci-fi film, with themes of perseverence and rebuilding in the wake of apocalypse running through it. The vast majority of bullets fired in action sequences are from automated turrets, and there are only 7 or 8 speaking parts, but I contend that this movie shows more of humanity that The Matrix, Die Hard, and Independence Day combined - with a fraction of the cast of each. Put it this way - if they offered a rental version, I would expect that 50% of people who rented it would turn around and buy it for the higher price once the credits started rolling. I don't know what Rotten Tomatoes was smoking when they gave it a score under 80 - this is a great movie.

One huge, ripe pile of hero goop - but still very entertaining This might be a first - a movie hero who defies death, the machine hostile takeover (after The Matrix, who needs convincing this is going to happen at some point?), gets to be the hero-martyr, wins the war AND returns - nope, not from the dead, but better! from mass production in a machine genome project to lead his people to safety and reunite with his leading woman. Well, I was entertained, so there. Cruise and Morgan pulled it off.

I really liked it A lot of people had all sorts of crazy accusations about Tom's acting and what not... How about this, relax. Enjoy the movie, what an amazing story. What a beautiful way to realize just what we miss every day, walking by nature, meanwhile watching badass fight scenes with robots, crazy flight machines, naked redheads, and Tom Cruise. Relax! It was if nothing, worth watching twice and I've a photographic memory... nothing irks me more than watching something I've already seen.
All Around Poor Scifi The cinematography was very good, the acting was reasonable, the premise was *almost* cool. Other than that, not worth the money. No A.I. as advanced as that would make so many horrible mistakes. Note: a global virus or plague is far cheaper than cloning and memory editing thousands of pilots.

Thought it would be better. Heard good things about this movie, but maybe I was expecting too much because I was disappointed. The story turned out to be quite predictable, the characters were difficult for me to care about, and I found it boring overall. It had some entertaining parts but that's pretty much it.

Something New Lets be honest, the movie industry sucks in regards to innovation right now. This movie is finally bringing some creativity back. Its storyline is something different and refreshing, yet its visuals are out of this world. I am not really sure why people claim this movie is so bad, I enjoyed it a lot. Finally not another remake!
Not perfect but a definite must see I believe that the best movies will leave you thinking long after watching them. This is one that left me thinking. I almost wish the movie was longer so that the plot could have developed more naturally and had things explained more in depth. This is one that most people will either love our hate, but it is well worth giving a chance.

Stuck with me I saw this in the theater coming in with no preconceptions and I was pleasantly surprised. The story was interesting enough, and with the gorgeous visuals and lovely ambient music/soundscapes, I happily suspended my disbelief. The result for me was a pretty great movie experience. Glad I caught it on the big screen.

Great Movie! I went to see this film when it was released in theaters, because I had seen almost every other good movie that was out at the time. My expectations for the film were very low. Most likely due to the trailer. The trailer made the movie look like it had a million different stories going on at once, with unrelatable characters. Thankfully I can say this movie blew my mind! Along with impressive and immersive visuals, the story made sense, but also made me leave the theater thinking about it even more. Job well done!

better than i heard i heard so many bad things about this i had very low expectations. i was pleasantly surprised. decent acting as always from mr. cruise. a good plot twist that wasn't some inconceivable time travel deus ex machina. special effects were great without being over the top. recommended.

Was good but not great !!! So the movie is good, the story line very nice but still allot small holes in the end of movie. The beginning is great, for 1 hour you will wonder what is going on, but then is done, allot holes and everything is predictable after... I enjoyed this movie and if i had chance to go to cinema to watch it again, i will, because visuals are great and Tom did great job also, but only Tom, the rest crew did so so !!!!

All around great movie Fantastic special effects and sound track. Sound effects were great, as well. Cruise and Freeman pull off their roles and these two have an awkward chemistry that comes together at the end. If you're bored, you're not paying attention. This movie is not for those with short attention spans that require a movie to walk them through the plot and supply nonstop gratuitous violence and sex. There is just enough of all of that with some twists and turns that keep you enthralled. Best SciFi movie of 2013, easily
Great Sci-fi! This is one of those rare movies that really exceeds expectations. The Sci-fi is wonderfully woven into action, love, mystery and hope. Solid acting from the whole cast. The special effects are used smartly to create striking imagery and never become a nuisance. And a well told story. The rest of the Sci-fi / action genre could learn a few things from this.
