What at first seems formulaic comedy gains a deeper resonance as we see how they represent two responses to cruelty and injustice -- first outrage, and with time, eventually, forgiveness.
Wesley Morris
It's smart and unsweetened.
Peter Howell
Even as Philomena embraces the expected feel-good dynamics, it avoids taking the usual path and doesn't paint all of the "evil" nuns with the same brush.
Jocelyn Noveck
We wouldn't care about any of this if the performances were weak. But both actors find complexity and depth.
Ann Hornaday
At its core, this clever, wrenching, profound story underscores the tenacity of faith in the face of unfathomable cruelty.

Authentic Performances & Story Authentic performances highlight an 'inspired by a true events' movie starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. Dench is always in the moment and makes us believe - and care about - a woman who's been missing a son who was essentially stolen from her 50 years ago. Coogan balances a disgraced and directionless journalist yearning for a big comeback with the devout atheist who has a beef with the Catholic church, and finds in Philomena's story the perfect grist for both his professional and personal mill.

Frontera

Watch Now Before It's In Theaters. Miguel (Michael Peña) is a hardworking father and devoted husband wrongfully accused of murdering the wife of a former sheriff (Ed Harris) after he illegally crosses the U.S. border. In an effort to help her husband, Miguel's pregnant wife (Eva Longoria) also attempts a crossing, but finds herself in the clutches of corrupt Mexican "Coyote" smugglers. The three find their lives intertwined as the ex-lawman investigates his wife's death and unearths evidence that could destroy one family's future, while saving the lives of the young couple. His discovery forces all sides to examine the complex issues of immigration and human trafficking that deeply affect the U.S. and Mexico. "Frontera" shows that while a border might divide the two countries, it can't divide human decency.
