David Jenkins
Over-extended but nonetheless thought provoking and humorous documentary.
Jonathan F. Richards
Maher is essentially and professionally a comic, and the measure of this movie is not just the thoughts it provokes but the laughs it generates.
Ben Mankiewicz
I think this is an important movie, challenging, many beliefs that many of us seem unwilling to talk about. Mainly, though, you'll laugh...a lot.
David Edelstein
Religulous has an unholy fervor that should start many bonfires.
Michael Phillips
About half of the movie works in its snide, hit-and-run way. The other half throws more and more darts at the same balloon, long after it pops.
Kenneth Turan
Maher sets out not after answers but cheap laughs that preach, so to speak, to the converted.

Was Maher afraid he might muddy his clownish jape if he actually brought into the mix a learned theologian?

This movie will not sit well with everyone. Certainly not with those who prefer faith over logic and skepticism. But to give credit were credit is due. This movie's goal is to call out any mistakes and wrong doing in the world of religion that many believers turn a blind eye to. If you're an atheist or a believer who doesn't mind exploring and learning from critiques then will you'll find this rather enlightening. If you're not well....
A dissection of the human tragedy. Laughable, infuriating, lamentable, and confounding; What else can you say about this subject matter? Bill asks, and asks, and asks because there's no greater detriment to theology than REAL inquiry and oh how does it show... Granted, we humans have no small amount of issues to tackle, but the inefficiency and incoherent insanity of Iron Age fairy tales is paramount to many of them. Well articulated and fearless, this documentary reveals religions most intrinsic core; catastrophic insanity...
Funny and unfortunately brimming with accurate information, well researched facts, and embarrassing nutters who make themselves look like jokes Great film, very well done and at times very funny. Despite Bill Maher's admitted Bias, it is far more objective and factual than any Moore documentary - which lean towards sensationalism. I'd like to see more like this from Bill Maher. I love that the Catholic church comes out looking like the most open minded, modern and realistic of all faiths profiled here...considering the blood stained past of Vatican rule. (Former Irish Catholic here...I know what I'm talking about when I call that Ironic lol)
How can a man with out faith question it? The goal of this movie is not to be honest with the questions of faith, but to ridicule those who have it. Faith is the belief in things unseen, and untouchable. That is why we call it faith. The sad part is that you have to make a decision to believe, or not. Both have eternal consequences. As for me, and my house we will serve God!
Makes you think Bill is just asking questions. Trying to make sense of why people what they believe in a lighthearted yet thought provoking way. The most interesting thing about this film is the people that he meets in his travels and how they either interact with him or refuse to interact with him.
Great movie based on facts. I will happily purchase a copy of this fact - filled movie for each religious nut job out there who truly believes Jesus was the son of a Deity that doesn't exist, Mary actually was a virgin hahaha, Jonah was swallowed by a whale, Noah and his boat haha etc. Religion is a crutch for fear, that's all. Breaking news, when you die we all lay in the ground... End of story. Additionally all the bad ratings are from Bible thumpers who grow angry at the truth.
Are u kidding me Bill Maher is the last person on earth that should be talking about religion because he has NONE . He is an athiest and a hater and needs to accept Jesus Christ . I will say one thing for radical Islam at least they believe in some kind of god Bill Maher only believes in himself. God help us all. Please remove this trash from this app. It is the most offensive thing I have ever heard of.
