Michael O'Sullivan
In Sound City, a raucous yet sweetly romantic documentary, dinosaurs do indeed rock the Earth again.
Melissa Maerz
Dave Grohl's terrific new doc, Sound City, profiles the studio where some of the greatest music of the past four decades was born.
Charles Cross
A joyous ode to a lost era of music making that will delight music buffs and those who appreciate a well-done documentary.
John Anderson
A cocky, affectionate and very musical documentary that may make its central point a few times too often.
Peter Travers
In his directing debut, Dave Grohl shows the instincts of a real filmmaker. Sound City hits you like a shot in the heart.
Peter Howell
Even if you don't know what [Grohl's] talking about when he says a room gives "great decay," or when somebody else extols "24-track sensibility," the passion of this project really pops right out of the groove.

If it doesn't break any ground as a documentary, it's a heartfelt testament to a place he considers among the most hallowed halls of rock.

Very Enjoyable The movie is overall very enjoyable, though the central thesis is generally undefined, going from the recording studio to the console as the protagonist. Awesome footage (RATM clips recording their first album!), and the last 30 minutes or so is stretched out long if you don't enjoy the music (I loved the music).
Excellent, though not what I expected. The first few minutes had me a little worried that it would be a dull, drawn-out film, but after the voice over and a brief introduction to Sound City, I was hooked. This is much more than the story of a place; it's a history of some of America's most influential rock acts. Dave Grohl does an excellent job telling the story as well as raising a valid question: What does the recent flood of technological advancements mean for musicians and the musical landscape? Engaging and thought provoking.
The human element I didn't even know this was a movie until I was fumbling around on YouTube. I bought the album a few weeks ago and had no idea there was a documentary. Up until now, I was totally clueless as to what Sound City meant or what Tom Petty's voice was heard on the first track. That being said, this documentary is less about Sound City and more about the human element in music. In no way am I trying to take away from the story of the Sound City studio because it's a good one, but the film is really a battle between the human element made Sound City great and digital recording. The film culminates in the making of the album I previously purchased and adore. It is an ode to recording with other people and not always getting it right. Those tiny imperfections in recording and those times when an artist didn't hit a note is what makes music genuine.
Awesome! If you are interested in music, recording and the transition of how times have changed in the industry then this is a must see. I didnt buy it off play, I bought it on dvd but from start to finish I enjoyed it thoroughly. Loads of music collaborations from different artists as Dave Grohl brings them together in this very clever documentary. There is also an accompanied music cd which I would also highly recommend featuring the tracks that were made in this documentary.

Rejoice & Shout
REJOICE & SHOUT covers the 200 year history of African-American Christianity, featuring the legends of Gospel music, including The Staple Singers, The Clara Ward Singers, The Dixie Hummingbirds, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Culled from hundreds of hours of music, tracing the evolution of gospel music through its many styles -- the spirituals and early hymns, the four-part harmony-based quartets, the integration of blues and swing, the emergence of "soul," and the blending of rap and hip-hop elements. It connects the history of African-American culture with gospel as it first impacted popular culture at large and captures so much of what is special about this music and African-American Christianity.

Neil Young Journeys
Music
4
In May of 2011, Neil Young drove a 1956 Crown Victoria from his idyllic hometown of Omemee, Ontario to downtown Toronto's iconic Massey Hall where he intimately performed the last two nights of his solo world tour. Along the drive, Young recounted insightful and introspective stories from his youth to filmmaker Jonathan Demme. Demme, a long-time fan and collaborator, captured these tales of Young's childhood and masterfully weaved them together with his mesmerizing music including live performances from the 2010 album Le Noise and powerful renditions of classics including "Ohio", "Hey Hey, My My", "I Believe in You" and previously unreleased songs "Leia" and "You Never Call". Through the tunes and the tales, Demme portrays a personal, retrospective look into the heart and soul of the artist. 2012 Shakey Pictures, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Forks Over Knives
What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.
Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country's three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to "battle" these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.
Could it be there's a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive but so utterly straightforward, that it's mind-boggling that more of us haven't taken it seriously?
FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called "diseases of affluence" that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.
The House I Live In
40 years, 45 million arrests, $1 Trillion -- America's longest, most tragic and costliest war is the so-called War on Drugs. Are drug laws fair? Should a drug sentence be a life sentence? The House I Live In examines the case from the perspective of the dealers, the jailers, the grieving mothers and journalists like David Simon (creator, The Wire). A FilmBuff Presentation. MPAA Rating: Not Rated

Foo Fighters: Back and Forth
A true chronicling of the triumphs and tragedies of the band's 16 year history. BACK AND FORTH chronicles Foo Fighters' entire existence: from Dave Grohl's cassette demos, to the band forming to play those songs to their ascent, to becoming one of the biggest rock bands on the planet - and every Grammy win and sold out show along the way. FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH features Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear recalling every stage of the band's existence more candidly and intimately than ever before culminating in a behind the scenes look at the direct-to-analog tape sessions in Grohl's garage that produced the new album, "Wasting Light."
