Most of the logic has leached away from this movie, and with it half of the fun.
Bob Mondello
Happily, there's a good deal of fun if you like things crashing violently into each other and out of warp-drive at regular intervals.
Christopher Orr
For all its chasing and falling and fighting-and the movie supplies a great deal of each-Star Trek Into Darkness is at its best when the Enterprise crew are merely bickering and bantering among themselves: less space opera than soap opera.
J. R. Jones
The conceptual sci-fi of the original series is nowhere to be found, though you might enjoy watching the skinny young actors approximate their counterparts from the 60s; Chris Pine is especially good as Captain Kirk.
John Anderson
While the action is often electric, it's the relationships that matter. That, and a lippy regard for a cultural legacy.
Mick LaSalle
The film is, for whatever else it might be, one of the funniest of the Star Trek entries.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a step forward from Abrams' initial foray into this universe in the 2009 movie.

Roddenberry would be proud This second look into the back story of the U.S.S. Enterprise shows the casting director(s) of 2009, Star Trek, The Future Arrives, knew what they were doing. The actors have grown into their characters, which in the best of situations would be difficult with such iconic roles they are being asked to play. The camera and special effects work is what anyone expects in a SciFi blockbuster but the storytelling keeps you viewing the movie again and again. Fans and non-fans await the third movie in the series.....
Not bad, for a reboot. It's not often that a once beloved sci-fi franchise is successfully rebooted as something other than a steaming pile (see: Star Wars 1-3). So when I saw Into Darkness, I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised to enjoy what can only be described as a faithful but modernized reboot that is definitely worth a rent.
An Amazing Reimagination There will always be those who fail to grok the efforts of those who seek to re-imagine a classic franchise like Star Trek. To them I would say, the loss is their own. J.J. Abrams presents his second installment of the Star Trek phenomenon as a moral lesson. The Darkness of the title is not some great, interstellar void but the darkness within. Think "Joseph Conrad meets Dr. Strangelove." Exception, superb, the best nod to the fans was the look on Chekov's face when's told to go change his clothes. Awesome scene, that.
Well Played and Renewed Except for distracting lense-flares, I thought this was an excellent re-thinking of the Khan mythos. That said, I knew Abrahms deals in lense-flares before I started watching it, so shame on me for expecting anything else. It was predictable at times, but I was only slightly disengaged by it; and cried, predictably, at the pre-death talk as I had when I saw the original in the theater so many years ago. Overall and in comparrison, I am far more invested in this storyline than I ever was from the original characters. It's a wonderful watch.
Terrible Movie Makes no sense but tries to fly by so fast so you don't notice the numerous plot holes, inconsistencies and the weak, unsympathetic character "development". Eye candy, sure, but its really just some modern, low effort action movie dressed up in Star Trek's clothes. Want wiz bang? Go get em, tiger, but don't pretend for a minute this has anything to do with Star Trek.
Kicks *ss - takes names I enjoyed the the hell out of this newest member of the Star Trek family. There are some detractors in other reviews, but you can't satisfy everyone. I walked away WELL satisfied. I certainly hope there's another adventure coming soon! Yeah, I know this review is short on particulars, but I don't want any spoilers here. If you're fan, but NOT a total fanatic or technophile who must pick apart all of our nonexistent future capabilities, you'll love this movie too. Go grab a drink and some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the action.
Great movie / musical score I was iffy about the 09' reboot but I.D. took those fears away lol. M. Giacchino's musical score is beautiful and stunning. The first time I noticed this composers talent was way back when, when I played MoH : Underground, on the PS1. Can't wait for the next installment on the silver screen.
We now understand more fully how Khan came to know the crew of Enterprise. The greatest evil is subtle; and works its way into our sensibilities gradually. What a ride! Inhabiting the skin of these characters just gets better. Let's hope the next forty gives the same level of trepidation and anticipation.
As good as or maybe even better than the first Sometimes, probably even a lot of times, sequels don't do so well. If you loved the first Star Trek with this cast then you'll once again love this sequel. The story of last movie was good but the story becomes even more engaging in this one with a constant rollercoaster of action and some familiar names from the past as JJ Abrams does a shout out (story wise) to the older Star Trek once again. Even if science fiction isnt your genre this movie has appeal and a great writing to get the audience sucked in.
Into The Dark We Go. I know people have said that this movie is a rehash of TWOK and i think in some ways it is. Actually, no, let me rephrase that. It's a twist on a favorite character but told in a new way. I actually thought this was better then Star Trek (2009) and I understand why it was subtitled Into Darkness. Having said that, I think the Shatner cameo would have worked better then Nimoy's this time around but because Shatner said no to cameo's........ I actually like the reversal twist of the radiation chamber scene. I didn't see it coming but story wise it makes sense and it also shows the writers knowledge of Trek lore. I hope they all come back because I can't wait to see where they will take the crew next.
Terrible, awful movie Hands down the worst Star Trek movie ever made. Yes, even worse then Star Trek The Motion Picture. I'd rate it zero if I could. Abrams took something great and crapped all over it. It's all action and no substance just like every other Abrams movie. Gene Roddenberry's rolling over in his grave.
Solid Story and Acting - Lense flair overused The second movie in the J.J. Abrams vision of Star Trek again leads with a complex story and stunning visuals, but the lense flair technique Abrams is known for is grossly overused and detracts from the enjoyment of the film. Great references and throwbacks that I as a Star Trek fan loved.
Please please Spare us anymore lens flare effect...okay? People have no sense of what Star Trek was about. Gene would not have approved unlike other reviews below. All this has become is over produced action flick for the ADD generation. Stupid convenient plot lines. Good thing about the Tribble. I'll stick with a film that was actually good. Wrath of Khan a true classic of Star Trek mythos. I highly doubt any fan of Star Trek is waiting for the next in series.
Star Trek seen the light. This helps our men and women feel we should understand we make mistakes they put there soul into work. We make demons so we don't know how it got there. We should be careful what we wish for. Hero's are out their just waiting to come out. Thank you for all you done to keeping peaceful world to enjoy what God wish for us to respect his wish......
Fun but not as good as the first one This was fun and entertaining, but not as good as the first. If not for the amazing special effects, I would have given it 3 stars. I didn't like the emphasis on action and violence which goes against what star trek is supposed to be about. As a summer movie goes, it was entertaining. I will see any trek movie and this one was not a bore.
