Nathan Rabin
Who needs competent acting and writing when there are so many shiny, pretty things flying right at you?
A.O. Scott
I think it actually honors the art form of dance, but not in a solemn, highbrow way.
Mike Hale
Functions less as a story than as a catalog of references meant to interest a young audience: mixed martial arts, parkour, X-games, Red Hook, Chinatown, D.I.Y. filmmaking.
Jennie Punter
The dance scenes are inventive and pop out in all kinds of strange places.
Kathleen Murphy
Though director Jon Chu brings admirable energy and imagination to Step Up 3D's dance extravaganzas, he can't animate shockingly wooden performances or cure stumble-footed dialogue.
Ylan Q. Mui
The main reason to see Step Up 3D is for the high-energy dancing and innovative camerawork, and on those points it delivers.

Saw 3D looked like the scariest tri-dimensional offering at the movies this year. Until now.

Story needed more work Since the birth of dance in film writers managed to create a wonderful story and the actors were believable. This movie has great dance scenes but the story is weak, completely lacks originality and the director did not seem too interested in character development. I watched it for the dancing & music. The only Step Up movie that passes muster is the first one with Channing Tatum.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! OMG I JUST LOVE ALL THE STEP UP MOVIES I PARTICULARLY LOVE BABY BOY WITH THE CULRLY HAIR MAN HE BE DOING THE DANG THING. ALL THE DACERS IN THE STEP UP MOVIES ARE FANTATIC YOU KNOW I'M ON THE LOOK OUT FOR THE NEXT ONES. COME ON PRODUCERS YOU CAN'T STOP MAKING A MOVIE AS GOOD AS THE STEP YOU WILL BE CRAZY IF YOU DO MAN THESE STEP UP MOVIES ARE DOPE!
Straight Crap Acting sucks, writing sucks, plot sucks, and the 3D was garbage. Okay what's up with all the dance team battles now? What happened to the kind of step up movie like the first one? These movies are going to continue to suck if they don't get rid of the group dancing. Not worth renting or buying
Okay. Not the best troubled teen going straight flick (ttgs film) or the best collecting strays for the end scene film (csftte film) . Felt like I could have done without the story, without watching the training film and just watched a documentary of the streets competition like it was on ESPN with a lot happier result.
