James Garner is a nothing short of a delight in this western spoof. The film takes place in the small western town of Calender, a town that experiences a gold rush when gold is discovered in an open grave by Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett). As gold prospectors flood in and out of town, the Danby clan, anxious to take advantage of the situation dispatch three sheriffs and they control the town. Into this situation, on his way to Australia, rides Jason McCullough (Garner). McCullough is an easy-going sort who just happens to be a crack shot. The town rapidly makes him sheriff. His first line of business is to break up a fight and to arrest Joe Danby (Bruce Dern) for murder.

With the dust barely settling at the O.K. Corral, the notorious Clanton brothers unleash their revenge. One by one, they gun down Wyatt Earp's brothers but they won't have the last shot. Using his US Marshal's badge as his authority, and Doc Holliday (Robards) as his deputized right-hand man, Earp begins a zealous pursuit of vengeance that the west will never forget.

Six hired hands on a drunken, playful spree accidentally kill an old man. Unforgiving letter-of-the-law marshal Burt Lancaster follows them home. Lancaster seeks the aid of local sheriff Robert Ryan, but Ryan and the local citizens try to divert Lancaster from his task because the killing was clearly an accident and because they are under the powerful sway of the boss of the hired hands, Lee J. Cobb. Lancaster tries to cut a deal with Cobb, but Cobb's hired hands, believing that it is impossible to reason with the fanatical Lancaster, goad him into a gunfight in which Lancaster kills the ranch foreman.
