One of the best movies of 2012 so far, in any genre.
Peter Hartlaub
By the time the ride is over, director Drew Goddard and co-writers Goddard and Joss Whedon will change course three or four times, nodding and winking but never losing momentum.
Lisa Kennedy
And you thought you were just headed for a weekend getaway.
Christopher Orr
A horror movie embedded in a conspiracy flick embedded in another horror movie-the most inventive cabin-in-the-woods picture since The Evil Dead and the canniest genre deconstruction since Scream.
J. R. Jones
The climactic one-two punch of special-effects chaos and meta-movie chin stroking should have the fanboys trembling with delight.
Stephen Whitty
"The Cabin in the Woods" gets at the story underneath the story, and the reason behind the clichés.

If it's true that you always kill the thing you love, then horror honchos Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard have taken an ax to slasher cinema in The Cabin in the Woods and chopped it up for kindling.

Don't waste your money OR ur time! I thought this movie was going to be awesome because of all the hype. Dissapointed is a huge understatement! I bought it and still to this day regret it! It was stupid and a waste of time and money! Do yourself a favor and wait until its on Netflix or cable for free. And that's only if you feel like its a movie you absolutely "must see".
It's a Comedy! It's not "Cabin Fever" and it's not "Evil Dead". It has similarities, but only in superficial ways. What it is is two very talented film makers who really love movies playing with their toys. The promo line is true... I knew exactly what it was, I was even spoiled, and it STILL was better than I anticipated. Put simply, if you've ever enjoyed a horror movie, you'll love this, just don't go in with expectations.
no plot This was the dumbest movie ever created reminds me of a M. Night Shamalyn movie. I hate that I wasted money on this no nonsense movie. I truly hated it.
Stupid movie Stupid ridiculous movie, it starts out good and interesting but than it turns to crap.

A Break From The Garbage We're Used To Seeing This movie is a fresh take on a genre that seems to be going stale. In this movie, Joss Whedon takes several concepts and cliches that horror movie fans have seen over and over and twisted them into a new, witty, interesting parody of everything we love as an audience. Anyone who disliked this movie simply didn't understand the direction.
AWESOME!!! One of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile. Josh Weldon writing it fantastic and as always witty. Its cliched in that its about horror cliches but the plot is not predictable.
UM! This was not what I expected The movie jumped around alot, it mixed Friday the 13th, Return of the Dead, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer into a mixed up mess. It had Awesome Graphic effects but the story line I thought to be a little stale. It is worth watching once just don't buy it !!
Ridiculous movie. This movie is just ridiculous. The beginning is stupid and the end is even worse. The only good thing is the special effects. I think that they tried to make an original movie, but they ended up with dissapointing one.
Freakin Awesome! I agree with Steve...Those who say this movie is all over the place are clearly NOT good movie critics & totally are not interested in or lack understanding a well thought out plot...this is THE Best put together scary movie I've seen in sooo many years! Original, unpredictable, funny and scary as hell! Far exceeded my expectations...if you're a good movie critic & want somethin scary, get it!
Killer comedy, a new genre of its own! 'Cabin in the Woods' is a brilliant take on stereotypical horror plots & the 'Scream' "rules" to survive a serial killer. Joss Whedon is genius. Anyone who enjoyed Buffy, Firefly, or Dollhouse will most likely fall in love with this movie. The twist and turns of the flick will leave you laughing & terrified. Fran Kranz steals the show as 'the stoner'. Whedon's writing does everyone justice. If you're a big Whedonverse fan, watch out for cameos from familiar faces.
Brilliant From Joss Whedon, Buffy Avengers on and on. Brilliant twist on traditional horror movies with a great script. Loved this movie. An intelligent horror movie. Guess that's the problem with the negative reviews. Most are used to mindless dribble.
This movie is great!!! This movie is f***ing great! I love the concept, and that it was scary but funny and crazy all at once! The fact you see so many nightmares in one movie was great! I loved it! I think the people giving it bad reviews just don't get it..it was awesome!
Can't explain without spoiling: Just see it. When I first saw this in theaters, I thought I was in the wrong movie for the first five or so minutes. I was very confused when the title screen confirmed it was, in fact, Cabin in the Woods. It got better and better from there. I love delayed understanding in plot, and you don't get the whole picture until the very end. You go in thinking it's a horror movie paying homage to the cult-hit Evil Dead, only to find you're one-third right. The writing is fantastic, the humor and horror is artfully intertwined, and the three-dimensionality of all the characters from the moment you meet them just heightens the overarching plot.

I loved it, whether or not you will. Just after watching it, I know this is going to be one of my favorite movies ever. However, it's really subjective. I'm going to try to give you as best an idea as I can of whether you'll like it or won't or won't, because if it's your kind of thing, it's an absolute must-watch. First off, its outward appearance is that of a horror movie. That's not what it is. The best way I can put it is that a horror movie is there, but it's not really the point. There are some tense scenes, and certainly a few disturbing ones, but unless you're incredibly jumpy, you won't get much horror value out of it, and that's because there's a major (unspoilable) element of the film that makes it into an almost surreal satire. And it's an incredibly good satire; anyone who knows horror movie conventions will get a TON of fulfillment out of it. But it's also where the subjectivity comes in, because if you're not interested in the satire, the film will fall pretty flat. After that satire, it goes in a different direction, but that I can't say anything about without major spoilers. I wish I could say more here, but you'll just have to experience it yourself.
Love it! I saw this movie in theaters. I loved it. It's in my top fave horror films. But it's one of those movies you have to pay attention to closely. And to fully appreciate it. But to enjoy it's one you have to watch a second time to really enjoy it because you already know what's going on. And don't have to follow so closely. But I still love it. It's creative, nothing that has ever been done. It's horror, sci-fi, action, and comedy! Absolutely love it an recommend it to everyone!!!
Terrible This movie made me mad when I left the theater. I was trying to give it a chance but the ending just locked it up as bad.Holy crap, it seems like they ran out of ideas for the ending.like other reviews stated, the movie started out interesting but will quickly nose dive. Why are people giving this 5 stars?I hate this movie and will not even watch it when it is on HBO,or regular TV. I would throw it away the BlueRay if someone gave it to me.
Finally a horror film for people that like good cinema I've never been into horror, its always the same schtick, mass produced for 13 year old kids with little to no plot, b-movie direction and uninspired cast. Cabin in the Woods is finally a horror film people with taste can enjoy! Its hilarious, and the most fun I've had in the theater in years. If you are capable of discerning good films from bad, enjoy a tastefully gory and funny flick, and are ready to have blast: this film is literally a dream come true. If you think Saw VI is a good movie, don't rent.

But when they leave the main road to look for their hotel they quickly become hopelessly lost. Misleading road signs send them in circles and soon night sets in.
