Wesley Morris
It's filthy, nasty, sexy, absurd, appalling, and exhilarating, and it succeeds as a musky union of novelist Cormac McCarthy's bleakness and Ridley Scott's sense of chic.
Guy Lodge
A great writer's pompous idea of pulp fiction, treated with stultifying seriousness by everyone else involved.
Richard Brody
Each scene serves as little more than an index card for the mechanistic plot, which Scott films in a glossy and fluid style befitting an industrial promotion for the movie's high-tech weaponry.
Sam Weisberg
The Counselor is the cumbersome end product of a high-minded writer trying to slum and a slick director aiming for cosmic depth.
James Berardinelli
It's not so much a bad film as it is a disappointing one. A very disappointing one.
Andrew O'Hehir
It's like a mumblecore movie about a bunch of Sarah Lawrence philosophy majors, made by coked-up rich people for 100 bajillion dollars.

Novelists don't always make good screenwriters-this is the first film for which McCarthy has written the screenplay himself-and The Counselor's nihilism soon becomes tedious.

The Counselor is Interesting Obviously this movie won't be for everyone but, for those that enjoy dialogue, suspenseful build up, and realistic consequences, then this is the movie for you. The actors are good, some more than others, the pace is slow but if you can make it through the first hour, then you got a wild ride ahead. Movie is very philosophical and like a quentin tarantino movie, the dialogue can be pretty heavy loaded. I'd give it a 3 out of 5, I like Ridley Scott films and this is a good flick if you can get into it.

Creatively Gangster Did you appreciate The Godfather? This movie is that level for 2014! Deceptive, creative and suspenseful. Some twists are predictable and sometimes who cares?! This is methodical, thoughtful flick. If you like mob movies, if you like stars and you like original directing... WATCH THIS MOVIE!

Loved It Great Movie This is one intense ride with a awesome cast of characters. The sex scenes in this movie are some of the best of ever seen with Cameran Diaz having sex with a sports car. The violence is a grim reminder that this is how things are for people living those kinds of life styles but overall I thought it was a great movie but the ending I thought could've been better or atleast told more of what becomes of Michael Fassbender.

Pretty terrible I'm a total movie buff I'm every sense of the word. I can actually like a not so great movie just because its something new to watch and there are usually at least a few good aspects to them. I also don't ever write reviews. That being said I really hated this movie. It was confusing as hell. I tried to like it but couldn't. Not even worth the rent. Save your money.

Very Good I can understand why some didn't like it but I thought it was a great dialogue about choices and the motivations behind them. All that and at times we are left with the painful reality that much as we would like, consequences occur with no option to alter or change them. Not as much about greed as about hubris.

Painful to watch This movie has some of the worst writing I've ever heard. Characters drone on and on and on about nothing. The plot was poorly thrown together and extremely predictable. I'm not exactly sure why the writers added the mystery of never giving the Counselor a name, but it doesn't matter anyways since you'll never care enough about him to want to know his name. Save your time and money by avoiding this wreck of a movie.
Really????? Wow...I just wasted two hours of my life that I can never get back. Dont let the stars fool you this movie had empty dialogue, unphilosophical quotes and random gibberish. What was the point of this movie????? I normally dont write reviews but this movie made me so frustrated I had to. Not even worth a redbox rental. If I could have given it no stars I would.
