David Thomson
The Descendants is humane, decent, and close to real quality.
Dave Calhoun
Payne is an unobtrusive director, a filmmaker who lets the script do the walking - in this case, perhaps too much.
Tom Long
One of the year's best films, a bubbly meditation on family and responsibility that weighs just enough to matter.
Rene Rodriguez
In the hands of writer-director Alexander Payne, Clooney has rarely seemed so much at home.
Joe Williams
In playing an everyman stranded between anger and duty, Clooney earns an emotional payoff that a lesser actor would simply demand.
Bill Goodykoontz
With so many balls in the air the temptation is to rush from one plot strand to another, but Payne takes the opposite approach. He also captures the complexity of emotional reactions that grief stirs.

Brief Review The Descendants moves at a steady pace, dishing out the reality of death and its sometimes slow and inevitable drawn out end of one's life. There are several themes here, and some are extra painful to even imagine. Awkward moments and humor are abundant in The Descendants and just as prevelant are scenes about loyalty, death, and physical and psychological pain. You love the family by the end and like the movie, far from loving it.

The Descendants I - LOVED - THIS - MOVIE!! It got my attention from the beginning, and kept it throughout to the end. Sad, sometimes funny, and showing what could happen if you neglect your children AND your wife. Lots of lessons to be learned in this movie. George Clooney played his part magnificently - I saw ALL the emotions I would've felt if I were him. The 2 girls playing the daughters played their parts exceptionally well - all the range of emotions including anger and sadness. The boyfriend thrown in made this all the more worth watching too. He had just lost his father a few months before and WoW did that round out the entire story and help you understand why he seemed like such an airhead - but NOT. I can't say enough good things here. JUST WATCH THIS MOVIE!

The misadventures begin when Miles (Paul Giamatti), an un-recovered divorcé and would-be novelist with a wine fixation, decides to gift old college buddy and washed-up actor Jack (Thomas Haden Church) with a celebratory trip to the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley the week before Jack's wedding. The two couldn't be an odder couple. Jack is an over-sexed charmer; Miles is a sad-sack worrier. Jack is looking for his "last taste of freedom"; Miles just wants to taste perfection in a bottle. Jack is fine with cheap Merlot; Miles pines for the elusive, perfect Pinot. Indeed, the only thing they seem to share in common is the same heady mix of failed ambitions and fading youth. And yet, as they make their way up the coast, Miles and Jack soon find themselves drowning in wine and women. Both men careen dangerously and comically toward mid-life crises. Now, the wedding approaches and with it the certainty that Miles and Jack won't make it back to Los Angeles unscathed or unchanged...if they get back there at all.
