I will concede the film is not a great success. Too many screens of blinding lights. Too many transitions for their own sake. Abrupt changes of tone.
David Jenkins
Lurches on a thin line between hyper-ornate space oddity and extended perfume advert.
Dana Stevens
The Fountain is the story of a gifted artist who dared to reach for the stars and paid for his ambition with a really stupid movie.
Andrew Sarris
Mr. Aronofsky's outlook on life remains too constantly pessimistic for my taste, and too completely joyless as well.
Keith Phipps
Darren Aronofsky clearly didn't set out to make a usual movie...[The Fountain's] a story of overreaching that itself overreaches, but that might have been impossible to avoid.
Richard Roeper
This is one of the worst movies of the year.

The movie may have significant truths to impart, although I have my doubts, but it feels too inexperienced, too unworldly, to have earned the right to them.

Best Aronofsky Film Same director as Black Swan, Pi and Requiem. This movie moves slowly. It is not for people with Hollywood induced ADD. Hugh Jackman gives the best performance of his life in a somber and serious role. But cheer up. This is the Aronofsky film with a happy ending. It's the only one so far. And visually, it exceeds any other sci-fi film in the last 10 year's. Only one scene is CGI. The rest is done with macrophotography of cells giving it a look you have to see.

Like most Aronofsky films, this one takes some thought But that's okay, as it is phenomenally acted and the premise is rather neat. It's a science fiction movie without being sci-fi (you can thank cable TV for turning the genre into that). It probably also wouldn't hurt to watch the movie at least twice to pick up on some things you invariably miss the first time since it jumps around a lot. A beautiful movie that isn't clear cut, so watch it with an open mind.

As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
