Wesley Morris
For all the antic, manic itchiness of his Gatsby, for all the jazz hands, the movie doesn't reach out and grab you.
David Thomson
It's stupefying, it's vulgar, it's demeaning-it's dull and there's nothing like the dullness that is trying to be a sensation.
Tom Charity
There are no two ways about it: The Great Gatsby is misconceived and misjudged, a crude burlesque on what's probably American literature's most precious jewel.
Christopher Orr
The central problem with Luhrmann's film is that when it's entertaining it's not Gatsby, and when it's Gatsby it's not entertaining.
Richard Roeper
The best attempt yet to capture the essence of the novel.
Connie Ogle
A failure that should have at least been a magnificent mistake.

"The Great Gatsby" is a cool movie, in both the positive and negative sense. You may certainly be impressed, but you may not be moved.

The movie was just as good as the book Favorite story ever read and seen. Read the book my junior year in high school and been in love with it every since. I even watched the old movie they made about it and wondered hmmm why not show daisy getting hit by the car? None the less when I saw that scene in 3d it immediately made my night. 👋👏👌💯😇🙌💜✌

Just Great One of my favorite books, Iv read it 6 or 7 times now. Although yes there were some changes, they made the movie overall a good experience and I felt like they stuck super close to the book. When I heard Leonardo Dicaprio was the cast for Gatsby I thought he was the perfect man for the job, and he blew my expectations away. Great Movie! I would highly recommend to anyone.

To watch again I'd pay: $7 It wasn't a bad movie. Stuck close to the book (as best I can remember) We rented and I walked away thinking "that was a good movie, glad we got that I've. I'd recommend it" now it's weeks later and I still feel the same way. so why not 5 stars? because I wouldn't watch it more than once, and it's an unoriginal idea - a movie based on a book... Hollywood needs to be more original.

Excellent movie & Great actors! A great movie! Storyline was exactly as the story read. This is a great movie for the family. There's nothing perverse about it. No more perverse than some of the cartoons that kids watch today should I say. To those linguistic geniuses here that use words as "stupefying", you might want to either use words to suggest which bipolar swing you're referring to when using this word. It can be over the top admiration or dismal dulling of the senses. To use it without inference would suggest you don't know the definition. Would definitely watch it again.

Good movie... Allow me to be one of the few to be HONEST and say I never read the book. That's the reason I saw the movie. Secondly, WOW you guys have to stop comparing the styles of two completely different mediums. If this or any other film adapted from a novel were to be identical, you would end up with butt sores because you've been sitting for seven hours...

Aiming for the impossible...and almost getting there There is a reason we have so many film versions of Gatsby: anchored by Nick Caraway's voice, the novel's best elements do not translate to a visual medium. That said, Lurmann has thoughtfully and beautifully tried to do the impossible, and this film is worth your viewing for that reason. Yes, Toby Maguire is a bit flat as Nick. Yes, Mr. Wilson here is merely a cardboard cutout of the beaten down working man. But for all the flaws, the charms of this film make it worth it for readers.

So awesome! This movie was great. I seen it for a school field trip. Really glad I went. I ended up hating some characters. But absolutely loving others! You know its written well if you wanna throw a show bc of one character in particular just erking you to the extreme. Or wanting to hug one forever bc they're sad! It was truly an amazing movie, deff worth the watch.

Revolting The original movie was incredible. One I will always remember. This one, I won't forget soon enough. Who ever remade this movie ruined it. Disgusting, vulgar. I should have know when that jackass Kanye West's music started playing. I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. Fitzgerald is rolling over in is grave.

Remove the rap and sex please Stunning movie. I should have known it was going to be kind of weird when I discovered it's made by the guy who also did Moulin Rouge. Anyways as a Christian there were disturbing things that were out of line that are out of character from the book. I know teenagers will see this for school and it's sad the movie was taken into depravity and it's headed into the curriculum.

Classic. I was skeptical going into this thinking it would be another remake that glosses over the classical films and classic book we all read in high school but I am so amazed at how this movie integrated current musical movements with the period piece scenarios that made me actually "feel" certain emotions. Any speculation of cheapness or corny soundtrack BGM will be thrown right out the door with in 5 minutes into the movie. On top of all that we have top of the line A-list acting with chemistry coming from all the actors. This has become one of my favorite films and years from now people will remember this particular film as a classic masterpiece rendition of the classical book whenever it is brought up.
Watch before you purchase Well, it had potential. Great costumes, sets,.few faux pas and actors who all seemed to have their own agendas which didn't include interacting with each other. For all you decaprio fans he.never looked or acted better. Altho.toby McGuire,s performance shown brightly, it still was not.enough to save the movie. Baz luhman.tried his.usual tactics of reinventing the music a way.overused.tactic. which fell flat in this period film. A terrible tragedy. The storyline and its movie.
Awesome This movie brought all my memories of reading it in high school. I love this movie. LEO AND Toby killed it. I fell in love with gatsby. And wanted to kick daisy and her husband in the face. What really pist me off to actually see and feel the pain carraway felt when no one especially daisy didnt show up at Gatsby funeral. For a movie I took it very personal. I felt like I was in each character shoes. WOW GREAT JOB.
who is the better gatsby? Leonardo is seriously overrated for the gatsby part. Yeah he acts it out fairly well but its not a part any other contestant could have done, Also i find it hard to see him saying "Old Sport" when he is the one that looks like an old sport (his face is not very masculine) He looks to much like a kid to be considered THE GREAT GATSBY. Someone who would have fit the part perfectly would be Brad Pitt his masculine facial feautures really would make him seem Great and he is also just as good of an actor as Leo.

Great Gatsby x2 We recently had a "Great Gatsby Night" and rented and watched both versions back to back. I was sure that Robert Redford and Mia Farrow would have better chemistry together and act circles around DiCaprio and Mulligan. Boy was I wrong. While both movies are enjoyable and follow a very similar script, scene after scene DiCaprio made Redford look like an amateur. Tobey Maguire and Sam Waterston both do an excellent job of playing Nick Carraway. However Joel Edgerton completely shames Bruce Dern in playing Tom Buchanan. Even Carey Mulligan bested Mia Farrow in Daisy. While there were a number of things to enjoy in the 1974 version, the 2013 take is outstanding in every way and much more fun to watch. For the soundtrack Jay-Z is timeless, his music defines New York just as well in the 1920’s as it does today; it was a perfect fit.

Excellent! This was a fantastic film! Great job by the actors starring in this movie. I believe this was well thought out & put together by the director. The cast choice deserves an A+! Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing actor and was the perfect man for the job. I believe any film with Leonardo as the starring role will be a great. For example, Inception, Blood Diamond, & Shutter Island were fantastic films by Leonardo at the lead. Another stand out was Tobey Maguire. He was a key role player in this classic story.
Beyond the forest If you let go of the in your face symbolism of the rich, poor, and working class in this movie. You might be able to share in the dreams of loneliness, longing, and love. The need for that 15 minutes, where you can live in the sun, no matter what your past has hidden away. Let yourself be caught up in heights of love and lust, and fall with the truth of ordinary people. It is easy to share your life's passions and disappointments, your life's experiences within this movie. So I really appreciated this love tragedy and all its players from the leads, the support, and the background characters.
