The Grey remains a genuinely gripping survival story and a refreshing change from stale urban action flicks.
James Berardinelli
The Grey is about raging against the dying of the light but also about accepting it with peace once the fight has been lost.
Laremy Legel
Three-fifths of a solid film!
David Edelstein
The Grey, despite moments of sublimity, is as predictable as a funeral. When Ottway angrily calls out to God, the nonanswer is sadly redundant.
Stephen Whitty
Somewhere along the line, apparently, it was decided that having men fight for their lives is not enough to hang a movie on. It has to be a movie about Big Ideas.
Peter Travers
Hold on tight. It's a true call of the wild.

"The Grey" may appeal to those who like entrails, tough talk and bad endings. All others beware.
User reviews

One of the Best of 2012 All the reviewers that said this movie was terrible must have seen a different movie than I did. Either that or they are too ignorant to actually get the plot. It is a survival movie that uses wolves as a metaphor for the fear in each of us. Do we face the fear head on or do we allow it to rule over and eventually destroy us? This movie is not about wolves it is about raw humanity. Duh!
Inaccurate Portrays wolves inaccurately and irresponsibly. Also possibly depicts live wolf being killed on-screen. No known humane oversight and generally irresponsible movie.
Sad Its sad how some would speak poorly of this film when you need to appreciate this for what it is. This wasnt a big budget action film either (Sick of reading about bad cgi) as they also need to get their money back somehow :P Overall a good movie, linear plot, good characters, and wonderful performance by Liam Neeson.
*insert sucky word here* @Dee...greatest comment ever. Now to the idiot who called all the haters idiots why the hell would we stick around to watch the credits on this steaming pile if the movie was so pathetic and unreal. Digitized killer wolves???? Really?? On second thought the credits couldn't have been worse than the movie lmfao
Bad plot. Good acting Right actor wrong plot. Messed up ending.. way way way too much profanity. Acting was great though must admit. BAD PLOT
Misleading trailer If you want to see this movie because of the trailer, you'll be disappointed. It's very misleading. If you want to see a movie that is powerful, well made, not your typical Hollywood crap, moving, and well acted, then it's for you. Don't believe the negative reviews. When I first saw it,I was expecting something completely different. Obviously three people giving bad reviews were also, and couldn't see the movie for what it it's. Like I said, don't trust the trailer, the movie it's do much better.
It was unrealistic and unsatisfying ending The wolves behavior was unrealistic. Why would they risk getting hurt by going after the live people, when there was plenty of dead to eat. The ending wasn't sad or happy, just questions.
Dark and mesmerizing This is a top quality film. All the people complaining that it was pointless and such don't understand what the movie was about. Liam isn't some super soldier hero, he is a man who has lost everything already that is put in a situation that is dire to those who still have something to lose. Yes, wolves don't hunt people, but they protect their dens and that is what they were doing. The movie is dark, lonesome, cold because that is the environment they are in. Any person who thinks it was boring is an idiot. This is not an action adventure movie, it's a survival movie that stars the normal human being. Since it has already been said many times here, Liam doesn't die, nor does he live. We as the viewr are left to decide with the last bit after the credits. If anything, it's symbolic of how Liam is just the lead wolf himself. Lost in the cold, trying to protect his men which is all the wolves are doing. The acting is remarkably good, Liam delivers like it was the role he born for, even though it isn't.
Avoid at all costs!!! I would have gladly paid $3.99 to avoid this movie. Worthless, senseless, uninspiring, uninteresting, unentertaining, depressing, infuriating, absolute POS!
It's Okay But... First off, this is not a survival action movie. This is a drama, with elements of survival. Liam Neeson is awesome as always and so is the supporting cast. The story is good and sometimes, the movie can be intense but you're either gonna like the movie or not. I wanted to see what Liam Neeson does best and so you all know, there is no big Liam vs wolf fight climax. It's straight up drama. Nothing against that, previews were misleading about that. Still, it's a good movie.
No classic, but watchable. Cinematography, writing, acting, editing, directing exactly what I expected from one of today's action films. Not very frightening or suspenseful or exciting. Noisy, chaotic action scenes interspersed with pretentious macho narcissism. Held my interest, but not something I'd care to see again.
Wolves don't attack humans, period. They never have anywhere on Earth,it just doesn't happen ever.I dig Liam though. This kinda movie creates unwarranted fears in people, like Jaws did in the 70's,though sharks do attack sometimes.Wolves never ever attack humans, you'd have a better chance of being hit by lightning than being attacked by a wild wolf/wolves.
Don't waste your time! This movie stinks right from the start. It is boring and we kept waiting for something exciting to happen but it never does. The ending is terrible. I love Liam Neeson but he schools have said no to this movie.
Worst stupid ending Completely pointless. A waste of time. Never fights the wolves. Don't waste your money.
Allot of death - Great video work as always great acting by Liam, a little on the the death and doom side, pretty much an unrealistic view on wolf packs. deff a cliff hanger at the end. I think a little more time could have been put into this one.
Only stupid people could like this movie. So unexciting and ridiculous that I fell asleep. By the way, wolves don't hunt or eat people. Not even by accident like sharks do. Now if the movie had killer kangaroos... maybe I wouldn't have fallen asleep in the theater. Maybe. The script and acting are so poor, though, I may have poked my eyes out instead! :)
Wake up people No it does'nt have a lot of special effects. It's just raw and realistic. The bad reviews are from people who have to have effects or nothing. Great acting. The wolves left you wondering cause you did not see them a lot. Ending kinda predictable. I wondered how he lasted that long. Liam was good. To the people who did'nt like it - Go watch Battleship. Now there's something realistic. Lol
A step backwards Awful. Good acting couldn't make up for the sophomoric use of old wolf stereotypes. Shameless and stupid.
Awesome! Not as action packed as the trailer would have you believe but still a very cool movie. Liam Neeson is a badass. This movie was no exception. *SPOILER ALERT* *sees woman getting eaten by giant wolf* yells: HEY! GET OFF HER!! *runs in to punch it*
