Keith Simanton
Extremely violent, extremely preposterous, extremely entertaining, The Matrix succeeds at two extremely difficult tasks: as a vast, exciting virtual-reality movie and as a defibrillator for Keanu Reeves' big screen career.
David Denby
The movie is nonsense, but it does achieve a brazenly chic high style -- black-on-black, airborne, spasmodic.
Mark Caro
The Wachowskis and cinematographer Bill Pope take advantage of currently available technical trickery to create visually distinct levels of reality while setting high-speed cameras in motion to make the action sequences particularly dynamic and fluid.
Keith Phipps
Where other films are done in by the freedom offered by computer effects, The Matrix integrates them beautifully.
Todd McCarthy
A must-see among genre fans, especially guys in their teens and 20s, for whom the script's pretentious mumbo-jumbo of undergraduate mythology, religious mysticism and technobabble could even be a plus rather than a dramatic liability.
Jonathan Rosenbaum
There's not much humor to keep it all life-size, and by the final stretch it's become bloated, mechanical, and tiresome.

Still a mind job after all these years There are a handful of movies I have vivid memories of seeing for the first time. Walking in to one of my favorite childhood theaters at random (the Uptown in downtown Washington, DC) to see what this odd looking thing was all about turned in to two hours I may never forget. It's like a comic book brought to life, an homage to cheesy martial arts flicks of yore, and a spectacular sci-fi blend of technology, spirituality, and philosophy. Highly recommended.

The Matrix If you love tech science fiction, romance, and plain old gunplay, "the Matrix" is right for you. There are cruel jokes, moments when you have to think hard, and sometimes when you feel like you are part of the movie. All in all, it is just outstanding, and if your kid watches it, it will teach him/her about self-confidence and believing in yourself, but since it is a R rated film, no need to show them this masterpiece.

The best. "That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Business men, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system, and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it. " -- Morpheus

Masterful Mix of Brains/Brawn... Movies seldom come together this good...even its sequels don't live up...this movie fires on all cylinders, with profound ideas/images... a modern-day techno-myth akin to Jurassic Park...but it has that crowd-pleasing coolness, with the best in fights, stunts, explosions...More than a movie, it is a meditation on modern man/machines...Think about it...watch it, then think again!
Food for thought A search on the internet shows the different philosophies attributed to this story. Cool story, continued in two sequels.

Ahead of it's time Mix one part ground breaking visual effects, one part interesting story line, one part interesting characters and one part kung fu action and you get the recipe for the Matrix. Many movies have tried to emulate this combination (including the sequels to this film) to limited success, proving you have to have the right formula to make this work. If you are a fan of action movies "The Matrix" is a must need for your collection.
