Richard Corliss
As for Schwarzenegger, he nicely fleshes out the convention of a soulless gun for hire. With his choppy hair, cryptic shades and state-of-the-'80s leather ensemble, he looks like the Incredible Hulk gone punk.
Jay Scott
An efficient, cold-blooded sci-fi splatter movie that never makes the mistake of forgetting that on some level it is deeply ridiculous.
Dave Kehr
As a souvenir of a kind of B-grade action cinema that has all but vanished, The Terminator should find a small place in the heart of every movie addict.
Geoff Andrew
More than enough violence to make it a profoundly moral film; and Arnold's a whizz.
Janet Maslin
This is a monster movie, and the monster's role fits Mr. Schwarzenegger just fine.
Variety Staff
The Terminator is a blazing, cinematic comic book, full of virtuoso moviemaking, terrific momentum, solid performances and a compelling story.

The movie's strength is that, like The Matrix, it combines action with ideas.

Nice But.. You gotta love the plot of this movie and obviously it started a great franchise, but it seemed to lack emotion sometimes. Nothing from this movie, besides Arnold's one liners, is very memorable. Terminator 2 definitely has this one beat, which is odd considering sequels are usually where a series goes down hill.

Amazing!!! James Cameron brings us one of his first and, in my opinion, best. The Terminator is unbeleively amazing sci-fi action flic with great writing, characters, story, action, and even effects to bring us one of the 1980's finest Arnold Schwarzenegger films. It is the greatest film I have ever seen behind JAWS.
Classic Pick! This is one of the best, although beaten hands down by the more advanced T2.
Excellent Great work by Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn! Not to forget the excellence of James Cameron.
terminator great movie and arnold was really gouing for the gold, shame he cant do that to some people who hurt other people!
