Efficient enough for newcomers perhaps, but never that chilling, and the predictably dull CGI underlines how far movie magic has regressed in the past couple of decades.
Christopher Orr
The line between homage and apery is a fine one, and The Thing teeters on it at times.
Richard Roeper
"It's big on the grotesquery but short on genuine scares."
Tom Long
It's not rocket science, but The Thing does offer solid cheap thrills for the slick gore crowd, proving once again: Horror doesn't have to be horrible.
Brian Miller
John Carpenter should approve of this reasonably respectful and tough-minded prequel to his 1982 The Thing.
Liam Lacey
It's no great thing, just a better Thing than expected.

It's the horror equivalent of one of those cheap, straight-to-video animated sequels that Disney's always putting out: same title, same story, none of the inspiration.
User reviews
Unoriginal The thing was nothing special. Very predictable, very cheesy, and a typical modern horror movie. If you don't see this you won't miss a thing. If you liked it, then cheers. Other than the performances of the main to characters, the only good things I can think to say are the set piece and the special effects. But there's no twist you won't see coming, even the ''huge twist'' at the end. I would go more in depth, but honestly I don't think this movie deserves that. + Please note that I didn't see the original so I have no idea how well it reinvented that one; this is a fresh perspective.
Amused me Being a fan of John Carpenter's classic I did not like this version. At first it looks like it is a remake but then I learned it's a prequel which made it more confusing. I guess I've seen one too many horror movies where new ones make me laugh. The only thing I can say is that it is better than the James Arness version!
A well done prequal I enjoyed this prequal to John Carpenter's Thing. A little confusing that they named it the same. But that's okay. I have to say the worst part of this is that the FXs now are so much better that it really out does them from It's predecessor. Even though those were outstanding at the time.
not bad... Being a huge fan of the first one with Kurt Russell, i was prepared for a major let down with the re-do. Especially seeing how Hollywood tends to lose the "feel" of the original movie as they have with many stinkers of late ie FootLoose, Fright Night, etc. But surprisingly, because it's a prequel to John Carpenter's classic, it offered new ideas and suspense instead of just rehashing the original. 4 stars mainly because it surprised me by enhancing with the plot of the first, and yet making it's own statements to about a killer being among us.
winegary review of the THING The original 'Thing' was released in 1951 as The Thing From Another World. It starred Kenneth Tobey and James Arness as the THING It is believed that Howard Hawks directed and scripted the movie, He never took credit for it. The film stands on its own with good writng. acting and natural thrills. Modern sci-fi and horror trappings didn't exist in 1951. Real movie making is what yuu got. The other movies are good but the 1951 version is a great movie. I've seen it at least 20 times. You will love it.
Very good I don't understand why a person would rate this movie without seeing it, that's unhelpful! I have see john carpenter the thing and the 2011 version I found this movie to be very entertaining it was a little frustrating because the movie kinda does not show the creature or how it takes over a person like carpenter's version in carpenter's version it horrifies the audience how it takes over a dog then it moves onto human fully showing it in detail. This movie plays like the alien series but its worth watching
Love it and people plz stop being idiots If you guys were fans of the original movie than you would be able to figure out that this is a prequel and NOT a remake, i hate it when people say " omg this sucks the original was better!" Watch the original again you idiots and stop making yourselves look stupid. Ps: love this movie and the 1982 movie of "the thing" <3
Nice try, but no cigar As usual, Hollywood defiles something sacred (Carpenters remake) just to make a few safe bucks. Better than I feared, but still a pointless endeavor. It borrowed heavily from the last version, including sets, dialog, conflicts, themes, and plot. What little was new was unmemorable. Watch the 80s version: true scifi artistry.
Blasphemy! It's disgusting how dumb and accepting people are these days. This movie should have been protested. Hollywood needs to crumble for it's shoddy business tactics and cash-ins. No one should accept this kind of CGI garbage. There is a difference between s goofy bad horror movie and a blatant attempt at making money off a classic.
Decent Pretty good, but doesn't hold a candle to John Carpenter's version. It was as if they took the formula of all of the suspenseful and gory moments from the previous movie and converted them into action and fake CG special effects. Still enjoyable for fans of The Thing, but don't expect to be blown away.
Outstanding - In some ways better than original As good as the Aliens movies. I don't know why more people aren't talking about this movie. It's better than the original in a lot of ways - it's like the modern technology and effects helped them tell the story better, which is rare - I know, but they did it.
Bad movie I really expected more, the monster designs were the only thing impressive but everything about the movie was poorly executed
Meh The CGI is borderline terrible, instead of playing up the psychological terror of not knowing who is the thing they go for stupid pop up scares. Pales in comparison of the original.
Very good! I don't understand some of these reviews. First of all this movie is a rarity these days. I personally am not tied to the nostalgia of the jc82 version. This movie does not skirt around the alien, with cheap tricks. Expect large budget cgi, a compelling story well tied to the JC version, and *gasp* dare I say good acting. Most of these people who wrote one star reviews need should take a class on good filmmaking and how to write a legible sentence.
Super excellent... For all the twits that comapred this badly to the original. Its actually written as a leadup to the original. Same idea, NOT the same movie. Chronologically reversed, and very well done! ...twits.....
Ok movie but no where near as good as the original. While a fun video to watch, the maker seems to have forgotten what made the original so good. The creature and lack of seeing it. They didn't show much of the creature in the first one not because of the lack of effects but the fact it helped add to the fear and paranoia. In this one they just seem to feel CGI is needed and then more CGI after that for the creature. All in all an ok movie but not the original.
Great prequel This movie is a great prequel to the original. The attention to detail is incredible. The movie gave great homage to the original. Not necessary to have seen the original but it will make it more enjoyable.
"The Thing From Another World." 1956 Have not seen this version, nor I plan to. No need to. Both the 1982 Version nor this version, from what I got of the trailer come even close to the Original! As far as story line and goose bumps! For those that have it.... know what I'm talking about, and that Was 1956 mind you. Forget CGI and special effects... That Was a classic! Rent it or better yet buy it! Oh, and by the way for those of you with the expletives, people grow up! No need for profanity...it's really unnecessary!!
