The important thing is that Carrey and the filmmakers have taken pains to give Truman that soul -- which, in itself, provides a kind of depth. In any case, it gets you to care about how it's going to end.
David Edelstein
The movie might have been a soulless exercise without [Carrey]. With him, it has an authentic tremulousness, and also a dread, as if Pinocchio needed to take on Gepetto and Jiminy Crickett to become a real boy.
Michael Wilmington
It's a satire/comedy/fantasy about the future of television and the people caught in its omnipresent electronic net: a supremely intelligent jape about a man named Truman Burbank.
Keith Phipps
Weir keeps things fairly entertaining, and is admirably not afraid to veer more toward drama than comedy, but his film, like the world it portrays, is all surface.
Anthony Lane
Carrey is on his mettle, but you wonder why thirty years of close observation have made Truman so funny; shouldn't he be a regular guy gone mad?
Joe Morgenstern
Its essential strengths are more dramatic and emotional than topical or satirical. Truman is a touchingly gallant creation, the hero of someone else's existential burlesque.

Despite Carrey, this film is Tremendous I'm not a fan of Jim Carrey but this film ranks among my top 5. The whole idea of society trying make us conform to certain rules is so visible in The Truman Show. The show's (the show within the show) producers use fear, pain, comfort, female attention, and other factors to try to get Truman Burbank to live within the lines. I guess I see myself in that character. We follow so many rules as a society that are just stupid, but we all get in line because it's easier than going against the grain. I found this show not only highly unique and entertaining, but inspirational. You only live once so don't waste time trying to live up to others' expectations. Do you what you were born to do!
Well scripted! A very good and off-beat science fiction film. Jim Carey was decent, showing a far bigger acting range than in previous endeavors. The script is phenomenal though. I highly recommend this movie if you're looking for a heartfelt science fiction drama.
♥ I love this movie. It is so unexpected and a bit sad. I had never seen anything like it before.
One of my favorite movies! Doesn't take itself too seriously. Has made me think I'm in my own show ever since. Similar to The Matrix or Plato's Allegory of The Cave. Reality isn't what you observe it to be.
So original! I am reminded of that old Travolta movie where his wife starred in too, yet seems to be different in this movie here.
